Further, it seems as if a majority of the testing is only being done with products marketed to and for children. For example, there is evidence that for the past three years there has been testing done on children's lunch boxes and bags. Three years ago this caught in the back of my brain. Last year, I paid specific attention and noted that specific, child sized and decored lunch containers were re-called but that the adult oriented equivalents from what appeared to be the same companies were not mentioned. Likewise, I seem to remember that inexpensive, enameled jewlery was recalled due to lead a couple of years back despite the fuss and cry that tween, teen, and adult jewlery was not expected to be chewed on and as a result should pose no objectionable harm. It looked no different than the toddler jewlery being recalled this week, nor the current jewlery not being questioned outside of the baby and toddler accessories department.
I can only say that this and what I've learned about our preventative and testing processes in the past couple of months has NOT resulted in much of my consumer confidence. It has been increasingly in my mind as I purchase, and even more so since the first Thomas recall of this year. I'm even starting to assess what I already own in plastic, painted, and glazed products.
My kid would be using a cloth sack.
