Sealing In Toxics

Our landlord insisted on using an oil-based paint on my neighbor’s floor and the fumes have given her a headache and made her nauseous. Do you have any tricks up your sleeve for how to help?
Yes, thank goodness for this wonderful sealant. It has come to the rescue so many times and after it has dried nobody would know it has been used. I just bought some myself last week because a wicker chair I bought had been finished with a petroleum-based urethane and I couldn’t tolerate the fumes, so I sealed them in with this. This same company also has a sealant for carpet fumes!
The product, SafeCoat from American Formulating & Manufacturing (AFM), is available around the country from different vendors. You can go to the AFM website and find a retailer near you that carries it. The product is waterbased and especially effective on porous surfaces. (The company has other types of sealants, too, as mentioned above, about carpet.)
