12 Last-Minute Handmade Halloween Costume Inspirations

Coming up with a fresh Halloween costume every year can be quite the daunting task. If you’re looking for last minute inspiration, we’ve got ten handmade ideas to get your creative juices flowing!

Some people meet the Halloween dressing experience with excitement and serious consideration each year. Some of us barely try to throw something on at the last minute. There have been plenty of years where I didnít dress up at all. But in recent years, Iíve been able to get a little more creative with the holiday. While I donít relish any type of costume that comes out of a plastic sleeve from a box store, I do enjoy seeing thoughtful handmade creations and interesting vintage styling.

For me personally, I enjoy a super-targeted look (Nurse Jackie instead of just a sexy nurse, and Ariel instead of a random hodgepodge mermaid getup), but there are many directions you could go. If youíre crafty, you can definitely work to create an outfit for yourself and your kids. You can sew? Youíre even better off! But even if youíre not into either of the things, you could hit the thrift store and piece together tons of different looks (especially if you choose a specific character from a movie or TV show of the past, and just recreate their hair/makeup/clothes).

For a little inspiration with all of this, check out our roundup of handmade and vintage Halloween costumes. I could have included many, many more (itís amazing how much stuff you can find online), but pared it down to my favorites. If you donít find an idea here, use the web to find your own treasured looks!

Love the Tardis dress.

As a massive Doctor Who fan I love the Tardis dress, I would defiantly wear that, Halloween or everyday (such a geek, don't judge me). I do wish Halloween was a bit more of a bigger deal here in the UK though.

I've always had homemade costumes, and thought they were MUCH better than store bought!

Those don't look like last minute hand made things to me. I'm not even sure if you are telling people they can order these at the "last minute", by which you mean at least 2 days in advance for shipping... or if you think the typical person who makes their own would have the right things on hand and can whip these together based on a few photos at the last minute.

A last minute hand-made costume is a "how to" for turning stuff in your closet or old linens in things like: hobo, pirate, mummy, Roman, femme fatale, etc, with nothing more complicated than accessories available at every drugstore in October.
