7 of the World’s Most Unusual Restaurants (Slideshow)

Some restaurants are so utilitarian — they’re just about filling your belly with food. But where’s the fun in that?! Check out some of the world’s most interesting restaurants where dining is an experience, not just a meal!

1. Club 33, Disneyland, Calif.

Tucked discreetly behind a door in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square is an ultra-exclusive — and ultra-expensive — members-only restaurant. After paying a $25,000 up front fee and a $10,000 annual membership, diners can ride up a rare 1880′s-era French Lift elevator to a restaurant and bar decked out in antique Victorian decor handpicked by Walt Disney’s wife Lillian.

2. Safe House, Milwaukee

Want to dine at Milwaukee’s Safe House? Well, you have to know the password, or be subjected to performing a funny dance! Indeed, this restaurant, tucked away in an alley in downtown Milwaukee with a sign marking it as “International Exports Ltd,” really puts its spy theme to work. The decor comes replete with two way mirrors, spy holes, secret passageways, a revolving booth, and, of course, 1960′s spy movie memorabilia.

3. Cat Cafes, Japan

What’s a cat lover to do in Japan’s bustling metropolises, where tiny apartments make it difficult to have a feline friend? Well, rent an hour at a cat cafe, of course. Yep, for a couple hundred yen, Japanese cat lovers can sip tea and hope to win over the cats roaming the cafe. But don’t even try to bring an catnip to these cafes — the stuff is (understandably) banned!

4. Kinderkookkafe, the Netherlands

Want to show your kids what an honest day’s work is like but can’t get around those pesky child labor laws? You’re in luck! At Amsterdam’s Kinderkookkafe, children cook, serve and clean up meals for their parents. With the aid of adult staff members, children learn all about running a restaurant.

5. Modern Toilet, Taiwan

Who knew a restaurant based on one of the most unequivocally unappetizing daily rituals could thrive? At one of the several Modern Toilet locations across Taiwan, diners nosh on meals served in mini toilets all while sitting on (unusable, of course!) toilets and admiring the bathroom-themed decor.

6. Restaurant Prevak, Czech Republic

At Restaurant Prevak, diners can enjoy the atmosphere and cuisine of prehistoric man — all with the comforts of the 21st century!

7. Heart Attack Grill, Las Vegas

The Heart Attack Grill is no stranger to controversy. At this hospital-themed restaurant, servers are “nurses,” diners are “patients” and orders are “prescriptions.” So what’s on the menu? Well, burgers ranging from 1-4 patties, known as single to quadruple bypass burgers, french fries fried in lard and butter fat cream shakes.
