It’s finally May and, for us in the Northern Hemisphere, it means one big thing: the world is in bloom again! It’s the perfect time of year, then, to visit a botanical garden. Read through to check out some of the most beautiful in the world!

1. Las Pozas, Mexico

The work of surrealist art patron, poet and eccentric Edward James, this gem is meant to emulate the Garden of Eden. Concrete structures, waterfalls and exotic tropical plants dot the 80 acres of land in Mexico’s subtropical rainforest.

2. Jardin Canario, Canary Islands

These tiny islands, off the northwest coast of Africa, are home to a number of fascinating plants, the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo is home to a number of them. Of particular note is the “Garden of Succulents and Cacti,” home to over 10,000 plants.

3. Katsura Imperial Villa, Japan

The gardens outside of the Katsura Imperial Villa are one of the finest examples of Japanese gardening. Built in the early 1600s by the Katsura imperial family, the grounds come replete with a pond, several bridges, cherry trees and much more.

4. Butchart Gardens, Canada

After Robert Pim Butchart’s limestone quarry became exhausted, his wife Jennie turned the pit into a sunken garden. From there, she added a rose garden, an Italian garden, and a Japanese garden. Today, these Victoria, British Columbia gardens are considered among the best in the world.

5. Keukenhof, Netherlands

Tulips, tulips everywhere! And, though tulips are the most commonly associated with the Netherlands, there are plenty of other flowers to see here — it’s the largest flower garden in the world!

6. Versailles, France

The gardens of Versailles are fit for a king, and for good reason — it was built for Louis XIV, a monarch quite familiar with decadence and luxury. No detail was overlooked in the construction of this world-famous garden.

7. Kirstenbosch, South Africa

Located at the bottom of Table Mountain in Cape Town, Kistenbosch is known just as much for its dramatic views as its amazing collection of flora. The focus here isn’t so much on entertainment as it is on preserving indigenous plants, something that makes it relatively unusual, and worthy of a visit. Kirstenbosch is also devoted to the rare and endangered plants of the region, propagating them on site and reintroducing them to their natural habitat.

8. Lingering Garden, China

A fine example of classic Chinese garden design, the Lingering garden traces its roots to the 16th century. Currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the home and gardens were close to being demolished in the 1930s.

I visited Victoria British Columbia - Butchart Gardens. It was fantastic. I would love to see the rest of these gardens.
