8 Strange Abandoned Places (Slideshow)

  • 2 of 8

Eastown Theatre, Detroit, Mich.

Opened in 1930 as a cinema, Detroit’s Eastown Theatre moved on to host rock giants like Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane until it was shut down in 1973. From 1975 to the mid-90′s the theatre had many lives — hosting everything from jazz concerts and live theater to adult films, church services and raves. It has been unused since the 1990′s and has since fallen into disrepair.

these places are fascinating! we don't have many in the uk, but i like visiting any i come across. there's something about the paint falling off the walls and the smell that really brings home how short our lives are and that we as individuals live relatively unmarked and unmemorable lives that are easy to forget to the future generations. i'd love to visit some of the old sanitariums and asylums in america. that'd be a dream come true!

I find places like this to be so sad--all those people, with their hopes and dreams--all gone, all devastated.
I do like ghost houses--now, that's where I like to "get the feel of" a by-gone era--it's like stepping out of "today" and into "yesterday"!
