Why Would I Want a Salt Lamp?

Phyllis, PA asks:

I've increasingly seen "salt lamps" in stores and catalogs. Why would I want one of these?

Annie: People love hearing about salt lamps when I give talks, and how crystalline salt helps to increase negative ions. The feeling generated by negative ions is one you find at the ocean, or in the high you experience in the midst of a big storm, or near a big waterfall. Positive ions, on the other hand, are full of pollution. Learn how to benefit.

Yosemite Falls has a negative ion count of over 100,000 per cubic centimeter. Fresh, country air has a negative ion count of around 2,000 to 4,000 per cubic centimeter. Los Angeles during rush hour has a negative ion count of around 100 per cubic centimeter. Humans respond most positively to a ratio of 2 negative ions to 1 positive ion, but such a ratio is rare at best.

Salt lamps provide a simple, natural way to increase the negative ions in your home.

Crystalline salt is a natural air ionizer that boosts the negative ions in the air. Tests show that lit salt crystal lamps improve the ratio of negative ions to our environment. The heated salt crystal pulls water molecules from the air to its surface, the salt goes into the solution of the water, neutralizes any positive ions (and the attached pollution), and emits the neutralized molecule back into the environment.

Most common negative-ion generators incorporate electrostatic technology to produce ions. But many think they stop working after two or three months because the fine-tipped metallic needles become blunted and stop working.

Natural salt lamps are made from salt mined from deep within the Earth and it naturally occurs in white to coral colors. Many salt lamps are from crystals mined in the Himalayas.

There is an excellent article about how salt lamps REALLY work written by Ionicsalts.com. Salt lamp websites have spread several myths over the last decade or more, but finally some truth and logic about what these lamps can and cannot do for indoor air quality. Definitely worth a read.

Also I might ad that the company that gave us our start and I am forever grateful for showing me the way to distinguish between quality and that of lower quality. Salt lamps there is a huge difference in quality. is related to yours. Please add it underSalt Lamps - Himalayan Salt lamps - organic gardening

My first time a looked at salt lamps I had not idea what they were. But I must say that I was interested even captivated. So yes I got involved not like a normal person I began to seek out ways to offer the highest quality lamps one could ever find. And that is exactly what we did. But first I have to say that why is it some have to have a skeptical outlook toward these ancient amazing products? I have not met one person that does not like or appreciate the appearance so dust off your ego's and enjoy them for whatever they mean to you. Just our opinion

Not to be a debbie downer, but I heard that electricity is one cause of positive (bad) ions in our air. Are the negative (good) ions emitted by the salt lamps enough to counteract the bad? Otherwise, aren't they are simply cool lights and not health fighting tools. Also, do the candles work the same when lit, unlit or at all?

Not to be a debbie downer, but I read that one cause of positive (bad) ions is electricity. Are the salt lamps' (good) electrically charged ions enough to counteract this output of bad? Otherwise, aren't they only acting as a cool light. Also, do the candle holders emit good ions when lit or not lit or at all?

hey everyone, Solay Wellness has some great specials going on, www.natural-salt-lamps.com, I bought the around the world set, a Polish salt lamp that was on a beautiful wood pedestal, a purple persian lamp thats perfect for my bedroom and a Himalayan salt lamp, all had dimmer cords with them, so wonderful to be able to sleep with them on. The more I add, the better I feel, its amazing.

I ordered my salt lamp at www.thehungersite: 1 for my home, 1 for my office, and 1 for my daughter's Christmas present. I go there every day to click on all the links to help give (for free, only a click) world food, books, medical help, breast cancer, rain forest, stray animals, and gifts! What more could you ask for? A salt lamp to light up the world.
