Why Would I Want a Salt Lamp?

Phyllis, PA asks:
I’ve increasingly seen “salt lamps” in stores and catalogs. Why would I want one of these?
Annie:
People love hearing about salt lamps when I give talks, and how crystalline salt helps to increase negative ions. The feeling generated by negative ions is one you find at the ocean, or in the high you experience in the midst of a big storm, or near a big waterfall. Positive ions, on the other hand, are full of pollution. Learn how to benefit.
Yosemite Falls has a negative ion count of over 100,000 per cubic centimeter. Fresh, country air has a negative ion count of around 2,000 to 4,000 per cubic centimeter. Los Angeles during rush hour has a negative ion count of around 100 per cubic centimeter. Humans respond most positively to a ratio of 2 negative ions to 1 positive ion, but such a ratio is rare at best.
Salt lamps provide a simple, natural way to increase the negative ions in your home.
Crystalline salt is a natural air ionizer that boosts the negative ions in the air. Tests show that lit salt crystal lamps improve the ratio of negative ions to our environment. The heated salt crystal pulls water molecules from the air to its surface, the salt goes into the solution of the water, neutralizes any positive ions (and the attached pollution), and emits the neutralized molecule back into the environment.
Most common negative-ion generators incorporate electrostatic technology to produce ions. But many think they stop working after two or three months because the fine-tipped metallic needles become blunted and stop working.
Natural salt lamps are made from salt mined from deep within the Earth and it naturally occurs in white to coral colors. Many salt lamps are from crystals mined in the Himalayas.

Ali: Salt lamps DO taste salty (Himalayan Pink Salt crystals can be purchased in gourmet shops). The taste is not as salty-tasting as table salt (sodium chloride). Similarly, most gemstones are compromised of mineral salts, yet don't necessarily taste of anything.
Since the lamps are not processed for food grade use, I don't think you're supposed to lick them (or grind off portions to top food with).

I agree with Jerry. I have one of their salt lamps for a long time. I ordered it to possibly help a chronic lung problem. I feel it's like chicken soup. It may not help, but it certainly hasn't hurt. Even if it doesn't really help, the lamp I have casts a nice soft glow to the room. I love mine and am glad I have it. I love it. Again, agreeing with Jerry, if it makes you feel better, what 's the difference.

So lets suspend belief and disbelief for a moment and appreciate the natural beauty of this 250 million year old work of Mother Nature's Art.
If the positive effects people attribute to Salt Lamps are scientifically provable or are simply a placebo, what's the difference.
If it makes you feel better I say light one up!
At Salt Lamp Creations (www.SaltLampCreations.com) we offer Salt Lamps and Natural Tea Lights that are a cut above in terms of aesthetics. Our product is carried in Ritz Carlton hotels which hold their suppliers to a very high standard which we have risen to meet.
Plenty of cheaper options listed in your blogger comments I am sure, but our customers want the best.
With regard to the religious among the readers I will refer them to Matthew 5:13-14 Clearly a Salt Lamp fits the verses.
Also at Salt Lamp Creations, you can find a bit of history of Salt and how Salt Lamps are mined and formed.
Thanks for the posting

I found this link to a site that has salt licks for horses, stating it gives them the same benefits we get, and is better than regular ones. I'm not sure, but seriously doubt a dog would go crazy on a chunk of salt.

Ok, I haven't read all the comments, but why is the salt lamp not tasting salty?

David L..... thank you for the link to the article, after reading it, a person must read all the way to the bottom.... even "Mr.Static" states the article is "his opinion" and states
"My role in the pilot project, and maybe in the (hopefully upcoming) clinical test, has merely been that of a physics consultant and observer—an observer who has gradually lost his belief that ions have no effect on human beings. However, to quote Luke 15:7, "There will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents." Still, the negative-ion myth and the ion-balance myth are nothing but that, myths." His opinion!

My god! How utterly foolish we humans can be to be so gullible! I believe someone else had posted a link to a very credible source for a discussion of the science behind the supposed benefit of salt lamps. It would be wise to do some basic research before you pay good money for snake oil. This is not meant to offend but to inform.

I have one on my desk at work (hospital) and I enjoy it's relaxing glow. One thing I notice is how everyone who passes my office is attracted to it and likes to stand around it. This was before I read anything about the ion benefits. So, it obviously attracts for some reason.

The bebunking article that is cited in these comments (http://www.ce-mag.com/archive/02/11/mrstatic.html) has a flaw - it does not acknowledge the very consistent comments of people feeling better and seeing specific other beneficial effects from salt lamps. It succeeds only in saying that we have not figured out what is actually causing these effects.

Very good, I believe in it because I made a research about electrical/electronic pollution and I know its consequential stress deseases but I wonder where can I buy salt lamps in Italy?
