For many, the palms people receive on today's 'Palm Sunday' ceremonies will be displayed and then burned, and the ashes will be used for next year's Ash Wednesday services. This ritual is mimicked in many other cultures and traditions. The Japanese often hang a rope of straw across the front of their houses in order to keep evil and bad luck at bay. The Celtic communities believed in hanging a branch or trimmings from a fir tree above the outside of their front doors to activate mystical protection. Other cultures put foo dogs or a pair of lions in front of the house to fend off negativity. But the biggest and best Feng Shui protection cure is the use of bottle gourds. This object is believed to be endowed with Taoist magic and is said to contain magic potions that can trap demons and dispel them in an invisible cloud of smoke. If you got 'em, smoke 'em!
