Adapted from Keeping a Nature Journal by Clare Walker Leslie and Charles E. Roth (Storey Books, 2000).

This simple idea encourages us to slow down, open up, and experience the refreshing beauty of a bouquet of spring flowers by minutely observing it. A lovely way to get all your senses involved when the weather is disappointingly cold and gray. You may discover creative talents you didn’t know you had!

1. Brighten up your spirits by buying a bouquet of spring flowers. Place them in a vase or pitcher.

2. Now draw them and write about them.

3. What do the colors, the shapes, the smells make you think about? You might write just a sentence or two, a few phrases, or even a poem.

4. Try wrapping the words around the flowers you have drawn or painted on the page as if they were part of the bouquet.
