Can Sustainable Agriculture Feed the World? (video)

Or to put the question another way, “Do we really need industrial agriculture to feed the world?”

We are told that the answer is “Yes” by big agricultural companies making GMO seed and pesticides that we pour into the food system and into our bodies. Of course that is what they tell us, but do you understand the argument of why that isn’t true? The author and food activist Anna Lappé has created a myth-busting video to explain it. Anyone interested in food or the environment should see this. There is also a resource filled website called Food MythBusters. This just launched as part of Food Day this week!

Ok thanks for sharing it's lovely and true. Now let's really look at what changes we might have to be making. Check out the huge Three Gorges Dam in China on Google Earth. Now check out what is surrounding the dam on the mountains. It's thousands of rice patty fields. They have to have them on the mountains, because the flat land is taken up by farms to feed people. China is huge & it's full of farms. We have more people on the planet every second. What about the rubbish dump we create by over packaging things & not being responsible for our rubbish which has resulted in a huge floating rubbish mass larger than Texas full of plastic bottles & plastic bags in the ocean. Are you recycling your envelopes and reusing paper for notes where you can? Check out Google Earth again and see for yourself how much forestry has been cut down in Indonesia alone, let alone Borneo and other places. Brazil has just signed a deal to cut down a lot of their forestry which will be going to China to use. Have you noticed fish starting to run out all over the world? In Australia we have to get calamari from China because Australian waters don’t have the demand for the people here. These are the REAL CHANGES WE HAVE TO MAKE, WE HAVE NO CHOICE! So what is everyone really going to be doing after this month, what being nice and more caring towards each other, we should be doing that and practising that anyway? Do we need to eat bacon & eggs for breakfast and hamburger or me

Bob S. makes a valid point. The collective farms in the ex Soviet Union did rape the soil. The Ukraine for centuries had been known as the "bread basket" of Europe.
In 1997 I flew over Latvia and other Baltic countries and then over the Ukraine. In contrast to the smaller countries that had kept to the old fashioned agriculture and were therefore covered with small acre lots just bursting with produce, the Ukrainian soil was almost bare. the man sitting next to me told me that it does not produce a fraction of what it used to before collectivization.
Both Russian and Ukrainian farms are like American farms today. Monocultures, chemical fertilizers, soil erosion and so forth. Both are the victims of greed for power and ideology.
In the Soviet Union it was ideology and a need to break the peasants who were seen as too independent. In the USA it is the greed of the corporations with their capitalist ideology. All ideologies combined with greed and lust for power are extremely damaging - not just of agriculture, but of everything.
True democracy is the remedy, but the corporations have taken over the Republican Party and the Supreme Court and they are determined that there never more will be any such thing in the USA.
Problem is that the corporation are not confined tot the USA, but spiders that have covered the world with their webs.
Sustainable farming using some of the old-fashioned methods of farming and permaculture is a good way to get back to worthwhile principles a
