Creative Recycling: Craft Ideas for the Holidays

While there are many ways to reduce consumption and waste during the holidays, homemade gifts are one of our favorites. Not only are homemade gifts personal and heartfelt in a way that store bought gifts rarely can be, but when you use recycled and reused materials, they are also inexpensive and better for the planet. Now that the holiday season is upon us, here are a few of our favorite DIY holiday craft ideas.

1. Memento Ornament: Do you ever find yourself holding on to the beautiful invitations from special events like weddings or baby showers, just to have them end up at the bottom of a drawer? Here’s a simple way to preserve special memories for yourself or as a gift for others with just a few simple supplies. Get the step-by-step instructions here.

2. Upcycled Tie Wreath: You can make a beautiful holiday wreath using old ties, perfect for your own decorating or for a gift. All you need are some old neck ties, a foam wreath base from a craft store, scissors, measuring tape and pins, and you’re well on your way to creating a unique decorative wreath. Get the step-by-step instructions here.

3. Magazine Christmas Trees: We love the idea of decorative holiday trees made from old magazines or catalogs, especially ones that looks as great as these! You can leave them unpainted, or add spray paint and glitter for a truly professional-looking decoration. The folding and glittering steps would be a great place to involve kiddos in this project. Get the step-by-step instructions here.
