Daryl Hannah was arrested with others outside the White House for protesting against construction of the Tar Sands pipeline which would carry oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Part of the pipeline would be built over U.S. land. “We want to be free from our dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels. If Obama approves of this Keystone XL pipelineÖ it would be a disaster. These pipelines, itís not ‘Ďif’ itís going to spill, itís ‘when’ itís going to spill,” she said. (Source: abcnews.com)
“How often?” might also be added to that line of questioning. It has been speculated that the Tar Sands oil pipeline would transfer about 900,000 barrels a day. Recently in Montana there was a spill from an oil pipeline similar to the one proposed to import Tar Sands oil.
Ms. Hannah uses biodiesel for her own vehicles, which is slightly-processed, used vegetable oil, usually collected from restaurants after they have used it for frying. The veggie oil is filtered and then treated using methanol and lye. She recently joined with a biodiesel company to help promote the use of the plant-based fuel. It typically produces less C02 when burned, so it doesn’t contribute as much to climate change when used in vehicles. Biodiesel only works in diesel engines though, and most people drive non-diesel vehicles. Hannah has been a longtime advocate for conservation of natural resources and reducing fossil fuel consumption.
