DIY Coffee Body Scrub

I love the smell of coffee in the morning but the caffeine can send me for such a loop! Sometimes I’ll brew it just for the “welcome to the morning!” aroma, then take the used coffee grounds into the shower for a wonderful, eye-opening body scrub. Bonus points if you actually get to drink the coffee!

DIY Coffee Grounds Body Scrub
5 tsp. ground coffee (used coffee grounds are fine)
1 tsp. sugar or salt
2 tsp. essential oil (avocado works well)

Mix ingredients together and using loofah rub in a circular motion all over your body. Leave on five minutes and then wash off.

And what does it do to a septic system? Those of you who have city water and sewage don't have to worry about getting that water clean again, but in the country where we dispose of our own waste thru a septic tank and drain field, and pump our water up from our own wells, more information on how these things like coffee grounds break down would be useful. Thanks

This sounds great, but avocado and olive oils are not the same as essential oils. 2 tsp. of pure essential oil would be extremely expensive and would likely burn the skin--especially an oil like tea tree. Seems like avocado or olive oil would be better anyway in terms of moisturizing the skin. A couple of drops of essential oil might be a nice addition, though the scent may jar with that of the coffee. Still, could be worth experimenting with. But only a couple of drops!

if your drains are slow to begin with because of hair (and you can loosen it by plunging or getting to the trap below)....i found that pouring a 2 litre bottle of cola in and leaving it overnight (hey...if it can dissolve teeth, it can dissolve hair i thought)

this is a great body scrub! hadn't used essential oil in the past....also, I have light hair, and I pour coffee (warmed slightly) onto it to give it a warm up.

I have a hand-held shower head that I installed (it actually works to cut down on water use, and is really helpful on cleaning day to rinse after the scrubbing has been done.)

Coffee is extremely messy in the tub, and may stain your skin if you use espresso or turkish coffee grounds. That said, it does get rid of scaly skin and supposedly is good for cellulite. All I know is that when I do use it, my shins are are scale free--even during the dehydrating winters and summers!

I use sugar and olive oil. I think it drains better in the tub :) I also use lemon (if my skin is oily). I have some homemade facials on my blog http://backtobasics-talia.com

I've heard that coffee grounds are good down the kitchen drain, so would assume they are fine in the bathroom. also, I imagine it is in such a small quantity that unless your drain is already clogged, it wouldn't be a problem...Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for sharing this great DIYt tip. I always use my old coffee grinds to feed the plants. This is even better! I added this to my blog for my readers to check out http://www.modernecohomes.com/blog/eco-friendly/lunch-break-eco-links-of-the-week-16/. Along with some other great tips you guys offered :). Love it!

It's not pretty but washes away with no problem and I have tons of hair!

I use just olive oil and coffee grounds as a facial scrub, works amazing!

The grounds don't dissolve like sugar or salt scrubs do and could potentially back your pipes up. In the shower drain this is a concern since there is usually hair caught in the drain as well.
