Earth Friendly Exercise Tips

Spring weather is here and summer is just around the corner. That means it’s a perfect time to add a little eco-friendliness into your workout. Whether you run, swim, lift, do yoga or any other fitness activity, there are plenty of ways to make your workout greener.

The easiest way to do this is to take advantage of the nicer weather and take your workout outside. Walking or riding your bike to get around is the easiest way to fit exercise into your day without a negative environmental impact. If you want more of a workout than a walk to the store provides, go running or biking outside instead of using a treadmill or stationary bike.

If you’re not willing to part with your workout equipment, you can now find ways to make them more eco-friendly. There are kits that can be used to connect the equipment to generators so your workout powers your laptop, TV, or other electronic equipment. There are even stationary bikes that can be connected to the power grid itself. When you pedal, you produce electricity, meaning you’re saving energy and money.

You can find eco-friendly options for most of the equipment or clothing you use to exercise. Even making a small change can impact the world around you. There are many organizations that collect used athletic shoes to be re-purposed as tracks and playgrounds, and plenty more that donate gently used shoes to those in need. Several companies make clothing out of environmentally friendly and recycled materials.

From the simple act of taking it outside, to buying a new reusable water bottle, there are plenty of ways to make your exercise routine greener. Try any or all of these tips to keep you, and the Earth, happy and healthy.

The exercise bike that powers the TV is a great idea. Probably takes the guilt out of watching.
