Easy Green Hair Gel

Hair gel can be a lifesaver: sometimes a dab is the only thing that will fix a bad haircut or a bad hair day. But commercial hair gels smell pretty terrible and they contain suspect chemicals, so what can we do? Try this couldn’t-be-easier formula instead! There is only one simple ingredient needed for this green and easy hair gel.

1. The secret ingredient in make-it-yourself hair gel is softened soap. Just be sure that the soap you buy is all-natural and scented with pure essential oils: my personal favorite is clear glycerin soap.

2. Grate some soap into a bowl, add a little water (the less water you add, the thicker the gel will be) and allow the soap to soften completely.

3. Apply sparingly to damp hair, unless you want to punk out in spikes, in which case–glob it on!

In our quest to be green, we can't throw common sense out the window. Always read the ingredients list, as most glycerine soap isn't pure glycerine. Why not purchase a bottle of pure vegetable glycerine?

i use personal care styling gel, it costs 1.00 and it doesn't have alcohol in it. It contains aloe vera in it. It's about the same thing as making your own.

All soap, by nature, is opaque. A by-product of that process is glycerine, a liquid not a solid.

If a bar of "soap" is clear you can bet it is loaded with alcohol, sugar and salt to make it transparent. Alcohol and salt are very drying and may not be something you want in your hair.

Glycerine bars aren't actually soap, they are classified as detergents.
"100% natural glycerine soap" is a misnomer, the glycerine is all natural but not too much else in the bar is. Here is what the ingredient list looks like in an average glycerin bar:

Glycerin Soap Ingredients: Purified Water , Glycerin, Sodium Stearate, Sorbitol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), Stearic Acid, Lauric Acid, Sodium Chloride. May contain titanium dioxide, mica, liquid colorant, fragrance oil, or essential oil.

Years ago when I lived in Texas a friend who had an aloe vera plant cut the "leaves" and left them standing upright in a jar. The liquid just seemed to leach out.

Lisa, could you please post how you xtract aloe vera gel from your plants? I got one ages ago but have never been able to use it because I can't get the pure clear gel out of the leaf without the irritating yellowish latex thing. Thanks.

To Rosalind
Amla is gooseberry. It is considered extremely good for hair. Shikakai is another herb which is also quite good. All herbal shampoos and conditioners have Amla and Shikakai in them.

what is amia and sikakai???

Deva hair products are very good & natural.

I second the aloe vera for hair gel. I use the aloe gel for my face and decided to use it on my hair to keep it back and it worked!!

A GREAT, FANTASTIC book you can order that's all about natural beauty is Jeanne Rose's Herbal Body Book. Seriously, go get it.

The skin(includes the scalp) is slightly acidic, around 5 and 6, this helps stop the growth of bacteria on the skin and to help protect against products with a higher PH.

I make my hand soap using the shavings of the glycerin bars and hot water. It makes a gel like consistancy and lasts for ever, well, not for years, but if you use olive oil glycerin soap(or others with good moisturizing essentail oils) I don't see a problem with using it on your hair.
