Dear Annie,

Do you have a suggestion for an easy-to-make moisturizer? I am getting so wary about buying commercial products, what with all the news about personal care products and endocrine-disrupting chemicals! —Jenny, MI

Answer

I agree, when you make your own products you are assured of what you are getting, and when you use the truly pure natural ingredients you can get really beneficial skincare products.

I’ve selected a few easy-to-make moisturizing products for you to make. Each has their own benefits.

Cocoa Butter Antibacterial Moisturizing Lotion
Cocoa butter is naturally water repellent and thus protective of the skin, it is especially useful for dehydrated skin.
1 tablespoon cocoa butter
2 tablespoons jojoba
1 tablespoon aloe vera gel

Melt the cocoa butter and jojoba in a double boiler over medium heat. Once the cocoa butter is melted, stir in the aloe vera gel until thoroughly blended. Use by dabbing on your finger.
Makes about ¼ cup.

Here is another moisturizer, this one doesn’t take any heating.
Soft and Silky Moisturizer.

Aloe vera, no doubt is good ingredient for the skin. Don't know about cocoa butter and jojoba is new to me. Well, always believe that natural pure ingredients is better.

Someting to share:
Natural cleansing lotion cleanses and pharurifies the pores of the skin. Mix one teaspoon each of milk and cucumber juice with a quarter teaspoon of lime juice, stir well and apply to face and neck. Wash off after fifteen minutes and the result will be a naturally healthy and glowing skin.

I use Aloe for all my skin troubles even Burns,I live in Egypt and my Mother-in-law now uses it...I even had Aloe Jell caps from America sent to me to take as a inside body cleanser. Works great

I've just started using pure vitamin E oil around my eyes, forehead and mouth - it appears to be helping in the appearance of fine lines or maybe it's just wishful thinking :) Either way it makes me feel good and helps with the dryness of the Colorado climate.

Can I just use the jojoba oil and aloe vera gel in the aobove proportion and leave the cocoa butter out. I have combination skin and Im wary of the cocoa butter.

In regards to Eugene's comment...I wonder about the safety of using Vaseline since it is a petroleum product??

I use a cream that ia made from aloe vera and vaseline that works for me but that will not prevent me from using or trying yours;I believe strongly it will help as well.

I use virgin coconut oil for a moisturizer, as well as eat it in my diet. My very dry skin is needing less and less topical applications (rub the coconut oil between your palms after your shower and apply to wet skin, then pat dry with a towel).

I also use my own concoction of lotion, consisting of a commercial base lotion that is all natural, and add about a teaspoon of olive oil to 8 ounces lotion. This is also perfect as a massage lotion, providing enough "slip" without being greasy. Essential oils provide an all natural fragrance.
