This Hanukkah, make this eco-friendly dreidel–a resourceful alternative to using a plastic or rubber dreidel!

* Print out the dreidel pattern.

* Glue the pattern to lightweight cardboard and cut it out. Carefully cut out the little holes at the top and the bottom of the dreidel.

* Fold the pattern into a box shape and glue the flaps in place on the inside of the dreidel. Let the glue dry.

* Push the pencil or dowel through the holes so that the point comes through the bottom. Secure with a little glue if necessary.

* Play the dreidel game!

I also would like to know what is a dreidel ?

Beth Liberman

A dreidel is basically a kind of top - a four-sided spinning toy that is part of a traditional game which was invented to tell the story of Hanukkah. On each of the four sides is a Hebrew letter which stands for the words "Nes Gadol Hayah Sham" (A great miracle happened there). In Israel, the 4th letter is different as they say "Nes Gadol Hayah PO (here, not there!). The dreidel is spun and whichever letter it falls on decides how many chits or coins the spinner gets to take or put into the center. The winner is the one who has the most when the center is empty. To make the dreidel above even more eco-friendly, use the cardboard from the breakfast cereal box - it's easy to cut and sturdy, too.
