Energy Entrepreneurs: Rethinking Raw Sewage

Energy Entrepreneurs: Rethinking Raw Sewage

In Brazil, architect Jorge Gaiofatto has designed a system that recycles raw sewage into usable energy, but this system is no modern marvel. It is actually a replica of an ancient technology used in Asia for centuries.

Fantastic! It always surprises me that the so-called civilized modern world has lost so many of the basic methods humans for centuries took for granted. We have such a lot to learn from ancient civilizations.

I must say that I get very tired of the current techno fetishes. Our forebears often had far more sophisticated and sustainable technologies for running the world. I am not saying it will be easy, but it is possible so we should have hope, roll up our sleeves, and get started now!

Thanks. Yes, it was a known technique but abandoned due to modernization!

I can see how that would be very benifical in parts of the world where homes dont need to be heated. just a simple cooking fuel. he says it saves him about 2 bottles a month? I wonder how many he uses over all in a month? is it a 50% savings 75%? that dosent really matter though it is the recycling I find interesting. I assume after going thru the filtering ponds the water can be used in the garden to grow food also? I would like to learm more about this process. However I am sure there are zoning laws that prevent it from being used here.

@Jon: all water is recycled sewage, bottle water is no different. All water goes through the same cycle and is just as likely to be contaminated with pollutants. Just because it springs from the ground doesn't make it "pure" and "healthy". In fact, only the bottle water companies would suggest that(wonder why?)... Some bottle water is even bottled tap water.

A great idea Jorge we have a lot to learn that can save us a lot of problems.

Another thing getting by city sewage treatment plants are pharmaceutical medications. Like psychotic, heart, pain and cancer drugs all entering our bodies without a prescription and with all their side effects. Nice going HHS, FDA, AMA and drug companies you are hooking us up like it or not.

Great idea......! Sewage bio-fuel.....! Maybe it will burn off what is in sewage germ wise and bacteria wise. Only if you knew what was in sewage. Your city drink water is recycled sewage. Hello bottled water.

VERY cool and I love how things are trending toward a return to simplicity!
