Freekeh Breakfast Bowl (Recipe)


Last week, we told you all about the wonders of freekeh, a wheat product originating in the Middle East. Now it’s time to cook with it! For starters, here’s a simple, tasty breakfast bowl — make a big batch on the weekend, and eat it on busy weekday mornings.

Freekeh Breakfast Bowl

Serves 4.


  • 2 Cups milk
  • 1 Cup cooked cracked freekeh
  • 1/3 Cup dried cranberries, cherries or other dried fruit
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1/3 Cup chopped toasted pecans, almonds or other nuts
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1/4 Teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 Teaspoon nutmeg

1. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring milk to a boil. Add freekeh, dried fruit and butter. Turn heat down to low and cover. Simmer for about 20 minutes, until the liquid has mostly absorbed and the freekeh is tender. Take off heat. Add pecans, honey, cinnamon and nutmeg and stir. Serve at once.

What seems to happen with these little known foods is that once they become known, and trendy, the price goes up and those poor devils who subsisted on them can't afford them.
