Gorilla Grandmother Turns 50 Years Old
Mouila the gorilla is celebrating 50 years on this planet, an age that is thought to be equivalent to about 100 human years. A party for her included six other gorillas. A park employee, Charlotte Jones, said,” The gorillas were incredibly excited when we arrived at the enclosure with the piles of boxes and were making a lovely deep growling sound that they do when they are happy.” A news channel videotaped her opening presents.
She is an endangered Western lowland gorilla, living at an animal park in the UK. In the wild, there could be up to 200,000 of the species, but they are vulnerable to poaching and habitat destruction. (One estimate says there are about 550 living in zoos.)
Mouila has given birth to eight baby gorillas. She is included in a list of famous gorillas for having such a large family and living for many decades.
Head gorilla keeper at the park, Lorna Wanless, said, “I have worked with Mouilla for 11 years: She is the head female in the group and is certainly a strong character. She is a pleasure to work with and has had a lot of babies which is a big help towards conserving this critically endangered species.”
The animal park where she lives works with the Aspinall Foundation which relocates gorillas from captivity to the wild in Africa.
