A Haiku writing contest is being held in honor of Koko the gorilla who will be forty years old soon. The contest began June 8, 2011 and closes June 30. Winners will be announced on July 4 to celebrate her fortieth birthday. First place prize is a color painting made by Koko the gorilla. Second is a DVD and book about Koko, and third prize is a stuffed toy gorilla.
To enter the contest, write a poem about Koko’s importance to you or to the world of 17 syllables total, with three lines of 5-7-5 syllables. Each line of the poem should be separated by a comma. Then tweet your Haiku to @kokotweets account with the hashtag #kokohaiku.
Their example is: @kokotweets Koko gives us love, humanity sits up straight, depth of being known #kokohaiku
The Gorilla Foundation provides a home and caretaking for Koko. They are dedicated to gorilla research, education and conservation.
