7 Grossest State Fair Foods (Slideshow)

Food vendors at state fairs are in constant competition with one another to think up the craziest new food concoctions each year. All across the country, these vendors are creating innovation out of unhealthiness, breaking new and sort of frightening ground in the world of artery-clogging culinary novelties. From the deep fried to the chocolate covered, the fair foods on this list are enough to make double cheeseburgers and funnel cake seem downright tame by comparison.

1.  Deep Fried PB&J.

Leave it to the wizards of the state fair circuit to come up with this extreme twist on a childhood classic. The deep fried PB&J actually sits on the more conventional end of the fair food spectrum, though it still packs of a wallop of about 1,000 calories.

2. Corn Dog Pizza.

There have been plenty of outlandish toppings on pizzas over the years, but it took until 2010 for corn dog pizza to make its mainstream debut at the Minnesota State Fair. These two popular treats apparently make for a popular union, and it’s likely they’ll never let a vegetable come between them.

3.  Deep Fried Kool-Aid.

At some point, fair food vendors might run out of new things to deep fry, but the development of deep fried Kool-Aid proves that it probably won’t be for a while. Who knows exactly how these little balls of sugar are made, or what they taste like, but let’s just be thankful no one’s decided to put bacon on them yet.

4. Fried Ice Cream Burger.

Drinking a milk shake with your burger and fries isn’t so much of a stretch, but leave it to the Florida State Fair to take a pretty ordinary combination and kick it up a few dozen notches. Your eyes don’t deceive you: yes, that is a giant glob of fried ice cream sitting on top of that pile of a cheeseburger, and yes, you probably gained a couple of pounds just looking at it.

5. Deep Fried Butter.

In the fast-changing world of fair food, deep fried Twinkies and Snickers bars are already passé. Meet the new dish on the block, which dispenses with name brand sweets in favor of good old butter, that building block of unhealthy fair food. The butter is fried in a batter with cinnamon and sugar, so it’s not quite as gross as it sounds, but still…deep fried butter.

6. Chocolate Covered Corn Dog.

Many of the most popular fair foods are all about combining unexpected elements, so let’s at least give the chocolate covered corn dog an “A” for effort. As for how the combination of a deep fried hot dog covered in chocolate and sprinkles actually tastes, it’s difficult to say, but it’s got to be the perfect fair treat for somebody out there.

7. Deep Fried Beer.

Somehow, it wasn’t until the 2010 Texas State Fair that someone finally thought to combine two of America’s favorite gluttonous vices.  It may look like a harmless piece of ravioli, but don’t be fooled: beneath that doughy crust lurks a gelatinous boozy center. Nothing hits the spot after a long day at the fair like a nice cold one, right?

I'm pretty sure I'd be happy to eat a deep fried PB&J once a year.

Hey, if you put brocoli or coliflower on a stick, dip it in butter, then deep fry it, it would probably sell !
