Ginger Healing Detox Tea with Turmeric Recipe

Inspired by The Seasonal Detox Diet, by Carrie L’Esperance (Inner Traditions, 2001).
There has been a lot in the news lately about the amazing healing properties of turmeric, a free-radical-fighting antioxidant-rich curry spice that has been hailed as a defense against both cancer and Alzheimer’s. When we found this tasty recipe for a warming, detoxifying ginger-turmeric tea, we were thrilled: after the holiday season, we figured we could use some detoxing and healing!
Then we tasted it, and were totally hooked: it’s delicious! Ginger and turmeric combine with citrus and maple syrup to make the perfect blend of healing nutrients. We streamlined the recipe to make it ultra-easy, too:
INGREDIENTS
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
1/2 teaspoon powdered turmeric
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1. Bring water to a boil, then add powdered herbs. Simmer for 10 minutes.
2. Strain tea into a mug, add maple syrup and lemon, stirring to combine. Drink warm.
Makes 1 serving.

I let it cool just enough to drink the tea through a straw so it doesn't get on the teeth.

The flavor and results from this tea are fantastic but everything is now yellow, my teeth, my pan, my pitcher, my fingers. Will peroxide be what I use on all of it? The yellow teeth are the worst. Any other suggestions? Yellow smile, Jodi H

This is really, really good. I added a teabag of white tea and fresh ground black pepper. Black pepper increases the absorption of tumeric in the intestine by a factor of about a thousand. The result was a complex, spicy tea with a mellow maple aroma that was just stunning. Here's the recipe: your recipe above except that a T-sac that contains 1 tsp white tea and 1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper is added to the cup and allowed to steep for at least 3 minutes before drinking.

I got this tea recipe from my doctor who suggested I try it while I was having my radiation treatments for breast cancer. It is supposed to help lesson the radiation burns. I did not encounter any major problems during my treatment.
I continue to drink this tea and find it very satisfying in the morning and it pretty much had replaced my cup of coffee in the moring.
Thanks, Cindy

Thank you for posting this recipe. I am a mental health clinician. Research shows individuals who sustained emotional trauma during their formative years (of brain development) may be at greater risk of developing dementia due to the effects of the stress hormone cortisol on the hippocampus (which controls memory.) If the anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric and ginger support healthy tissue maintenance than your recipe offers another ray of hope to trauma survivors. Thanks again!! Sincerely, Molly, MSW
