The US Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to avoid a product called VitaBreath. VitaBreath is sold at health fairs and online. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene notified the FDA after analyzing a sample of VitaBreath and finding a very high lead content in it. They were prompted to conduct the analysis after a health patient in New York was reported with a high lead level after using VitaBreath and two other herbal products. The FDA is working with state official in New York and California (where VitaBreath is located).
The FDA press release states that individuals who have taken VitaBreath should contact their healthcare providers about testing for lead levels. The press release also contains contact information.
Lead poisoning is a serious condition, and children are especially vulnerable. In children it can impair mental and physical development.
A website that sells VitaBreath says it is an herbal dietary supplement that promotes better health for people with asthma.
