Help Prevent Cancer 10 Ways

By the Care2 staff.
With cancer rates rising alarmingly, it is good to know that keys to the prevention of many cancers are in our own hands. Find out ten ways to take charge of your health and help to prevent cancer, starting today.
* Limit your exposure to toxic chemicals wherever possible, starting at home. Current research suggests that common chemicals are linked to breast cancer. You can minimize your risk by switching to all-natural cleaning and personal care products today. Care2’s Green Living pages are filled with thousands of inexpensive and effective formulas to use instead.
* Get 10 minutes of unprotected sunlight every day. Evidently, Vitamin D plays an important role in cancer prevention and many of us are woefully deficient. Read more about the role of vitamin D in cancer prevention.
* Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.
* Keep your consumption of alcoholic beverages down to 2 drinks a day if you’re a man, 1 if you’re a woman.
* Exercise. Even as little as a 10-minute walk every day will benefit your health.
* Manage your stress, relax, and practice self-love. Simple meditations, yoga, or a daily walk can all help keep stress levels low, and allowing yourself to be simply and gloriously human will help, too. For ideas, see Care2’s Spirituality pages.
* Eat colorfully. Bright colors in fruits and vegetables signals the presence of health-promoting phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory properties. See The Seven Food Colors of Health. And check out this list of healing herbs and spices you can add to your food. And be sure to get lots of fiber, from whole grains and beans as well as those great fruits and veggies.
* Eat organically if at all possible. Here is a list of the ten most important foods to eat organically.
* Drink tea. Some studies suggest that even one cup of black or green tea per day reduces risks of certain cancers.
* Avoid foods processed with sodium nitrate and nitrite, foods that have been grilled for long periods of time, and salt-cured foods.
* Know your fats. Avoid foods high in trans fats or polyunsaturated fats and choose healthy fats instead, like nut butters, avocados, and olive oil.

add your comment »Great tips and comments, thanks to all...cancer is like wildfire in my family as well Bryon. Another thought is always always take control of your health care. you know your body better then anyone, if something doesn't
feel right'. have it checked out. Expand your knowledge about cancer or any other disease and ask your dr. to take the time to talk to you ... listen to you and answer you in lay terms that you understand! And you can always get a 2nd opinion, I am glad I did....at 24 one dr. had me set for surgery, I was terrified but I got a second opinion and I didn't need surgery at all. Glad I listened to that 'inner voice' that nagged me until I got another opinion.

When you go to your doctor for a yearly checkup make sure he/she does a complete blood analysis. I have a cancer called Multiple Myeloma - a blood cancer - which like ovarian cancer comes without warning. Symptoms are non-existent until it hits but clues are available in your blood work - if your doctor pays attention. Also, if you are overweight, lose the weight. More and more cancers are being linked to overweight and obesity. Mine has a definite link to this (and I was obese most of my life). Mine is also linked to hair dye so since my treatment and going bald I am super happy to have grey hair even if it is unruly curly hair instead of the poker straight hair I had all my life.

I have another tip avoid HRT (Hormone Repalcement Therapy). I scheduled an annual check up with my doctor right after my 45th birthday. She wanted to put me on HRT(Hormone Replacement Therapy)without even seeing any blood work and I really wasn't having any symptoms other than an occasional hot flash. She qualified it with my mother's early onset cardiac problems. My mother had her first hear attack at age 48 and several after that. We'll I said I'd think about it. Then I did some research and found that HRT actually causes heart disease. Researchers from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health found increases in coronary heart disease, breast cancer, stroke and pulmonary embolism. My mother was put on HRT in her thirties because she had had a complete hysterectomy. I truly believe that HRT was the cause of her heart problems and contributed to her death.
So I chose not to go that route. When I started having night sweats and more intense hot flashes I tried various alternatives. I found using a combination of natural herbs and natural progesterone did the trick for me. I get a great nights sleep and the hot flashes and other symptoms have disappeared. Its a start and it can't hurt to follow these tips. Having a questionable night here, like who benefits if there is no cure...even if they know its already been discovered...Big money ..even if it cost lives...what an awful thought.

Eating fresh grown makes me want to eat more fruits/veggies. There is always room for container gardening. I just planted beans and my son gave me strawberry plants for Mother's Day. Mmmm

My grandmother and I eat homemade fruit cocktail almost every day, and it is definitely colorful - yellow bananas, red grapes, orange melon, etc. My grandmother is 86, and I plan to reach that age - at least.
