Hero Dog Saves Owner From Bear

Hero Dog Saves Owner From Bear

Henry, a Labrador Retriever mix, is being hailed as a hero for helping his owner battle an attacking black bear at George Washington National Forest in West Virginia.

According to a police report, Steven Krichbaum, 59, was walking with Henry in a wooded area of the forest Thursday when the pair came upon a black bear and two cubs.

“The black bear, in response to Krichbaum and his dog’s presence, responded by attacking them,” the report said. Krichbaum later credited Henry with saving his life by fighting the bear while he kept hitting it with a rock, reported Virginia’s NVDaily.com.

The man and his dog were injured in the clash, but Krichbaum was able to drive his Subaru to a fruit stand in Middletown, Virginia, where they got help from the stand owner’s wife and friend, as well as from rescue crews, before being transported elsewhere for further treatment.

Witness Cathy Patterson said Krichbaum suffered from “claw marks and gashes” and was taken to Winchester Medical Center after being treated at the fruit stand.

Henry had several wounds, too. The worst was on one of his hind legs. He was taken to a local emergency animal hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

A Virginia state wildlife biologist called unprovoked attacks by black bears in the area “extremely rare.”

Too many cases like this happen, a mother bear will always protect her cubs, its a natural instinct for them, what we humans need to do to respect that about them is to give them their space to live in the wild as they are entitled to their place in this world, too. Especially any mama animal and their babies, they are wired to protect them against all challenges.

Such a stupid man for putting himself and his dog in danger! The bear did nothing wrong, just protecting her young!

Good Henry. BUT I agree 100% with everyone in that we need to LEAVE THE WILD THEIR SPACE. Plus that the bear was a mommy... what would you have done?

When will stupid humans leave bears alone and stay out of their territory, especially accompanied by an unleashed dog?! Of course, there are many who bring the dogs with them so that they can trap bears and then kill them.
Whatever the case, bears are often the losers--will be hunted and killed, leaving cubs to starve to death. This really angers me!
Black bears will not attack unless feeling threatened and protecting their young--a logical response.
Years ago, I was canoeing in Canada on a river, about 10 ft from a black bear eating berries. My canoe partner yelled "Boo!", and the bear hightailed it out of there--more scared of us, then we were of him.

NOTE EVERYONE: IT WAS COMPLETELY THE HUMANS FAULT AND HIS UNLEASHED DOG THAT ATTACKED THE CUBS!! THE MOTHER WAS TRYING TO PROTECT THEM AFTER THE DOG ATTACKED. YET, THEY HAVE TRAPS AND HUNTERS OUT TO KILL THE BEAR AND THE CUBS!!

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION TO PROTEST THE KILLING OF THE MOTHER BEAR AND HER CUBS, ASAP!!
