HPV: Beyond the Political Fight

HPV: Beyond the Political Fight

The coming election year promises to be a highly charged one, and besides issues concerning economic recovery, flat taxes, and other moral hot button topics, one topic threatens to raise the ire of parents everywhere. Texas Gov. Rick Perry (often the butt of everyone’s jokes) gave an executive order mandating the HPV vaccine for young girls (not boys) which he claims will help prevent girls from developing cervical cancer as a result of contracting the sexually transmitted virus. However Perry is seemingly alone in his enthusiasm for this compulsory vaccination, as other Republicans on the ticket, including Rep. Michelle Bachmann and Sen. Rick Santorum have come down hard on Perry’s enthusiasm for this new Texas law. And so the debate surrounding teen sex and enforced vaccination resumes.

What could be more awkward than the discussion of pre-adolescent sex and cancer? Well specifically talk of the human papilloma virus (also known as HPV), which serves as the viral cause of most cervical cancers, is one of the more awkward and difficult subjects for parents, doctors and children alike.

Over the past few years, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that girls in pre-adolescence (around 11 or 12) receive the HPV vaccine (Gardasil) to protect them against particular strains of the virus known to cause cervical cancer. There is also talk about mandating the vaccine for young boys, but that seems to be a harder sell to the public for some reason. The idea is that if young girls are vaccinated prior to engaging in sexual activity (this is assuming that the vast majority of girls under the age of 12 have yet to have sex) they will avoid exposure to potentially lethal strains of HPV that are transmitted sexually (interesting note: it appears as if the makers of Gardasil are hard at work on a comparable vaccine intended for boys to help protect them from genital warts and other forms of cancer).

Recent news has revealed that along with parents who remain leery of a pre-adolescent vaccine for young girls, doctors are less than confident about administering the vaccine for many reasons. One of the sticking points is the question of how long the vaccine will remain effective once administered, and if it is advisable to administer a vaccine to an 11-year old who may not become sexually active until she is 16, well after the point where the vaccine would be most effective. To add to the general concern, the CDC has reported at least two deaths among young girls possibly related to the vaccine, and other doctors have voiced their apprehension about neurological problems related to the vaccine.

In addition, there is the whole hornets nest of highly emotional and moral issues surrounding a vaccine that presumes an active sex life for an adolescent girl. Needless to say, many parents have expressed moral outrage (as well as medical concern) when it comes to compulsory HPV vaccines for their girls. Some have seen this as license for, or a tacit approval of, unchecked teenage sexual shenanigans. Others worry that a vaccine of this sort will provide a false confidence among adolescents that they are somehow protected from sexually transmitted diseases.

While I am hardly a fervent advocate of wholesale vaccinations for everyone, I do see the potential value of a vaccine that is both safe and effective. However, we rarely have the luxury of both of these qualities wrapped up in one anodyne package. I assume people will remain vocal about the use (or lack thereof) of HPV vaccines until something radically shifts in the public consciousness or in the quality of the vaccine – or both.

I would love to hear from readers regarding this issue of HPV vaccines. Has anyone had to make this decision for his or her child? Do you feel it is ethical to have compulsory vaccines of this regard? Is there something inappropriate about vaccinating a young child against a potentially sexually transmitted disease? Should more testing be done before we start handing out “sex shots?”

Can't we do something to increase basic science education so that people can understand the issues and make informed decisions? The politics of the issue are based partly on false premises and misinformation. Thanks for helping spread good information.

I can't help but wonder if this vaccine will just lead to more people believing that unprotected sex is safe sex. Though a vaccine is better than nothing (if it works) what about changing the behaviors that are causing STD transmission rates to rise? Knowing where your children are, who they are with, and what they are doing is probably better protection. Don't let them run wild. Education about (and fear of) STDs and pregnancy is a great tool for getting your child to make smart decisions for themselves.

Affording them a healthy start to life without the sullying influence of prurient publications ‘pushed’ in their faces. These are sex tabloids offered free in bulk within Ontario libraries to all ages, from news stands at child eye level and featuring children’s toy dolls on the cover and sexually engaged in pornography.

Thank you for your time and consideration. And pass it along.

We have manipulated and controlled the sheeple for the purposes of profit...we have lost touch with the people at the end of the needle...
they are seen as only ‘NUMBERS’ by the ‘underwriters and undertakers’…
NUMBERS who can be looked after by government's big pockets through new legislation protecting big pharma that holds them HARMLESS.... 'free of litigation and blame' when their concoctions of profit fail…as they do regularly….victims are then paid with their own tax dollars...the Pharmaceutical Consortium pays NOTHING for harm and death caused by their incompetence and irresponsibility....the GOVERNMENT picks up the tab and BEREAVED and OVERWORKED parents take care of the the life-long damage and grieving of young lives shortened and damaged by the CUPIDITY OF THE CORPORATOCRACY...and we don’t take action....
Instead we elect these charlatans and shills for the CORPORATOCRACY....SHAME ON US!
The Mitt Romneys and Rick Perrys are just the ones we have caught…there are far more hiding under the rug…of political diplomacy.

Thank God there are other choices which give us the “Audacity of HOPE!!!”

lets consider that soul power may be a no side effect waste free approach - nobody has to do it, but if interested on page 154 of "the power of soul" book by zhi gang sha
he has a prevention of cancer technique.

Longevity and good health are discussed in more detail in "Tao II" book by zhi gang sha (in my opinion i think its more in depth than the power of soul book for healing life in general based on soul healing and i prefer the Tao II book). It may help.
