Incense for Baths: An Inspiring Idea

Adapted from The Essence of Incense: Bringing Fragrance Into the Home by Diana Rosen (Storey Books, 2001)

To enhance the experience of your bath, try using incense. Incense in the bathroom can be used to promote relaxation, awaken the senses or inspire contemplation.

For a relaxing bath, try lavender incense. Lavender is the perfect scent for the bathroomit is very clean and refreshing, yet relaxing. Even the word lavender is related to bathing, as it comes from the Latin word lavare, “to wash.” Lavender has been used since the days of ancient Rome to scent baths and to sprinkle as lavender water (eau de lavande) on bed linens and toweling to induce relaxation and a restful sleep.

Sweet violets, Oriental jasmine, and rose absolute are equally relaxing. For the exotic or sensuous bath, consider ylang-ylang or gardenia; to refresh and awaken the body and spirit, try rosemary, lemon or rosewood. Eucalyptus and pine are bracing scents perfect for a hot soak on a cold day. Sandalwood and frankincense are more contemplative; for many, nothing is sexier than vanilla and chocolate, perhaps the two most popular elements of scented products today.

It does not matter how simple or elegant your tub is. As long as the water is warm, the lights dim, with only a candle or two burning, and the incense fragrance of your choice scenting the room gently, you can float away until you are thoroughly refreshed and relaxed.

Cleaning the bathtub before you bathe enhances the total experience. When you are through bathing, leave the tub cleaning for the next time to avoid an abrupt halt to your floating experience.

I like incense similar to the kind in the picture...japanese incense...made with pure woods and oils, nothing synthetic. A good brand to check out is Shoyeido, made this way for centuries and not too smokey!

I love vanilla. I also love grapefruit and citris smells. Lavender is also amazing for a relaxing experience. As for other bathing habits... I'll admit a quiet bath is very calming, but I've always loved listening to music while taking a bath. Whether it's something soothing, like Enya, or something more up-beat I can sing along to at the top of my lungs in the privacy of my own bathroom... music has been a huge part of my life. It's a welcome addition to "me-time", along with every other time in my life.
