Shahid Kapoor, a thirty year-old Bollywood actor, has been selected by PETA as India’s sexiest vegetarian. He has appeared in about twenty Indian films, and is also a trained dancer. He said of the award, “Being voted as sexy is a matter of perception, but being vegetarian is a lifestyle change and something that comes from a sense of responsibility.” (Source: PETAindia.com)
Other celebrities such as John Abraham, Shilpa Shetty, Celina Jaitly, Hema Malini and Maneka Gandhi have worked with PETA India on animal awareness campaigns. Estimates have pegged the percentage of vegetarians in India at a range of twenty to forty percent.
Mr. Kapoor explained his commitment to a non-meat diet, “I love chicks… pigs, cows, fish, and all the other animals too. That’s why I turned vegetarian.” (Source: Indiatimes.com)
PETA India is based in Mumbai and was launched in 2000. They try to promote awareness of animal abuse, and animal rights. Industries they focus on are food, laboratories, leather and entertainment because that is where animal abuse is present. They have influenced public policy successfully to prevent elephants from being hit by vehicles in Indian cities, and making improvements to animal living conditions in zoos.
