Is Chinese Air Pollution Dangerous to Americans?

Q: Is the dust the blows over from China dangerous to the health of Americans?

A: According to the EPA, pollution wafting into the United States accounts for 30% of the nation’s ozone. There is satellite evidence that dust from China does migrate at least as far as the Western United States. Any type of pollution is bad for the environment and can potentially have negative consequences for human health. Helping China with pollution control measures is an important aspect of US policy; however, America still has quite a ways to go in terms of its own output.

I just saw a speech about China now leading the way in renewable energy with wind mills and actually investing in the USA to build wind mills. Also there is Barack Obama and Hu Jintao Announce US-China Electric Vehicles Initiative. I think now that China has tons of extra money they will start transitioning into a developed country with social insurance and unemployment insurance etc. as well as responsible growth. Till now though the US produces much more pollution than any other country on our planet, so we as Americans should be careful about throwing the blame around.

I totally agree with Colleen D. I just watched a show on BBC where the state of the Amazon Forest was discussed. It seems the forest is losing much of its timber at a rate faster than expected, and the damage of such deforestation was deemed irreversible. We've been hearing this doomsday news for the longest time but why are all our efforts to stop the destruction failing? In some small way may we give special help to halting deforestation in as many forests in the world, but especially in the Amazon Forest, which is considered the Earth's "lungs"? Anybody for starting a petition, fund drive?

I fear things are going to get worse before they get better. The world economy is growing so fast it sees it's own progress before it see the fall out from that progress.

While we all know, however emotionally, that the USA is one of a largest polluters, that is not the point of this article.

It scares me that countries such as China are industrializing into the new century at breakneck speed with little or no regard for the environment or its own people.

It may well be up to the USA and other very developed nations to keep developing the technologies needed to clean up and make industry safer. How we conduct ourselves is the example we must set. And we are, albeit not as quickly as many here demand, but we are.

A hundred years ago we were today's China, spewing out pollution. Now it is other countries coming up after us. This has been happening for a long time and it is not something new, it is getting worse. Because our west coast is becoming affected now we concern ourselves? Even Care 2?

There are plenty of things to be said concerning China and it's practices, beliefs and philosophies. It is the world of nations who need to apply the pressure here which is easier said than done.

You are having a laugh, I presume !
The US cause horrendous pollution and CO2 emissions ............
The US REFUSED to sign ALL the major International agreements to reduce emissions affecting Global warming !
The rest of us see the US Government as hypocrites, only interested in controlling the World in the name of " The New World Order " ... faking incidents, exaggerating problems, and leading we allies to war with totally fictitious intelligence ! ... then like you going on to blame others !
Is it not time for US citizens to see through all this nonsense ?
The New World Order is taking hold,
they keep us afraid, and teach us to hate the rest of the World !
Why ? ... so those few who control the wealth can have more ... to hell with the rest of us ! ... they want it ALL !
They don't want 3rd World countries to develop whilst they are in recession ... caused by the few greedy fat cats running our banks, who also control our Politicians, which is why we tax payers have to bail them out whilst they have the audacity to carry on paying themselves obscene bonuses after such horrendous trading losses !
The citizens of the UK,have had enough !
and we've had enough of our Government doing anything they are told by the US Government to protect " our special relationship ! " because of that, we are now branded as liars and hated by half the World !
Stop blaming others for this and that ...
look nearer home ... get your own house in order before criticising others !

Tired of being back doored..told one thing, but given another. I have family, friends who will only watch main stream media, CNN or Fox. We need to watch all to make an intelligent decision.

TERESA, thank you for your comments. You are correct that we have been borrowing from China for years, but the Obama administration with this congress is spending more that the last several administrations combined. Too fast, too much, too stupid. I fear huge consequences for generations to come, and feel betrayed. I heard an analogy regarding Obama's speech today about cutting the 3.6 trillion dollar budget by a few million dollars... "The cuts in the budget are like taking a teaspoon out of the bath water while the spigot is still running". I'm just a middle class, married woman (to a great guy, by the way) who lives in New Jersey originally from the Midwest. We work hard with a small business, and would love to retire, but can't now. For the last several years, we have given our spare time to heading up an animal rescue group, taking care of my mother who has alzheimers, and a sister who is ill. I believe that the people of the United States of America have always been the most generous people in the world, but while no nation is perfect, shouldn't we be exploiting our positives, as well as our negatives. Nothing much has been said of Bush's abundant aid to third world countries. I almost fell over when the current administration wanted to get more tax money from individuals who give to charities by lowering the percentage they could deduct on their taxes. What! Doesn't that mean the people will end up giving less?? The last thing I want to see or need is big government

But USA is still number one pollutor, no?

Nancy W.

We are part of the problem, we can be part of the solution. It is better to look at ourselves and see where we are lacking how we have contributed to the problem and find solutions. Blaming anyone else is not going to solve anything. When will we grow up and take responsibility. Lets find some solutions or use one of the many that are already out there. We are not dumb nor are the Chinese.
