Life’s Little Luxuries

Life’s Little Luxuries

Sometimes, I like to jot down a list of simple pleasures—things that make me grateful to be alive, and deep-down happy.

Here is my latest list. I would love to hear about yours.

A four-poster bed.

A collection of hand-made soaps

Fresh flowers on my writing desk every morning

A handmade quilt

An old wooden chest

Silk scarves

Lace tablecloth, gracefully skirting the floor

Polished wood flooring

A snuggly couch

Floral cushions

Sachets of herb tea

The scent of vanilla

Hot cocoa topped with marshmallows

A slab of rich dark chocolate

Lots of natural light

A beautiful bird bath

Foot-hugging bathroom slippers

Crisp, clean cotton bedlinen

Body butter

Flowerpots and herbs on my kitchen windowsill

A corner where I can just sit, just be

A lovely chandelier, lit with candles

A beautiful full-length mirror

Fresh fruits in a big bowl

A wicker basket for my magazines

Red check napkins and tablecloth

A woven cotton rug

A lovely coffee mug

Homemade cookies in a jar

I wish I had time to list them all! Think I might start a gratitude book - will write down five every evening...

The author likes a lot of THINGS. I tend to agree with many of the comments where MOMENTS are listed. One of my favourites is simply just to be relaxing at home because it's in complete contrast with the stress and overwhelming sense of work I need to get done 6 out of 7 days of the week.

I like this exercise! My joy is in nature. Sunrise, chattering crows, sunshine on flowers, dew on grass, white sheets on a clothes line, waving in the wind, fruit trees in bloom, dogs playing on the grass and vegetable gardens. All things cozy and bright and shiny also bring pleasure.

I felt very sad that only creature comforts seemed to be what made folks glad to be here, until I saw the lists of Anne Brabson and Kirsten B. Surely we are meant to do more with our time on Earth than simply consume and live the good life (hedonistically defined). Surely we are meant to help others, touch lives for the better, leave the earth and its most vulnerable a little better off because we were here. Not just take up space and pamper ourselves. Sorry for the buzz kill, but felt I had to speak for something more substantive than warm fuzzies.
