Little Free Library: Books for Everyone!

These Little Free Library kiosks have been popping up all over Atlanta, and it turns out they’re helping folks share books around the world!

The Little Free Library’s mission is threefold:

  • To promote Literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.
  • To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.
  • To build 2,510 Libraries–as many as Andrew Carnegie–and keep going!

Don’t you just love that? It’s all about making books available to anyone who wants to read by providing a place where folks can give and take books for free!

I spotted the library pictured above on a run in my neighborhood. They used one of the pre-built libraries and incorporated an old newspaper box to hold even more free books! Here’s a bigger photo of that library:

Starting a Little Free Library

On the Little Free Library site, you can order a pre-built “shed” or find plans to build one yourself. You can stick to the plan, or – like the one in my neighborhood – get creative with your library’s design!

The only mandatory fee associated with the Little Free Library is a $35 fee to register with the official group. This fee helps them keep the movement going, and it gets you on the worldwide map of Little Free Libraries. When you register, they send you a sign and a packet to help you get started. You can also request a book package to help stock your new lending library, though you do pay shipping and handling on the books.

Once you have your materials, you just set up the book shed and start sharing!
