Should I Drink Milk to Prevent Osteoporosis?

Although I believe whey protein, which comes from dairy is a great source of protein, I do not believe dairy is healthy in general. We have all been brainwashed to think that dairy products strengthen bones and stave off osteoporosis. But this is not the case. Walter Willett, M.D., professor of preventive medicine at the Harvard School of Public Health and his colleagues analyzed dietary information gathered from nearly 80,000 women, ages 30 to 55, over a 12-year period. They found no evidence that women who consumed one to three servings daily of milk or other calcium-rich foods–like cheese or yogurt–reduced their risk of hip fractures, the standard measure for osteoporosis.

The findings became even more dramatic when the Harvard researchers examined women who consumed three or more servings of dairy a day and found that none had any added protection against bone fractures. The data shows that Vitamin D appears to be much more important than calcium in preventing fractures. And interestingly, countries with lowest rates of dairy and calcium consumption (like those in Africa and Asia) have the lowest rates of osteoporosis.

Whey is a waste product that the industry has convinced people it has value much like we were sold on the idea that diamond engagement rings are necessary. Now people pay to take it rather than the industry having to pay to have it hauled away. Super bonus based on super gullibility.

Snake oil selling at its finest especially as it seems to have convinced the writer here that we even need more protein than we are getting in our foods. Of all the macro nutrients protein is probably the one we least need to be concerned with, other than getting way (ha ha play on words) too much!

It's protein that is acidic causing calcium to be leached from our bones to balance our blood. Animal products are far more acidic & consuming them also displaces the alkaline plants we need for health.

Really I wonder how many patients the writer has seen with a deficiency (as it's usually not a lack of protein but other issues such as a lack of food in general), but I can bet he's seen numerous with the opposite issue which is diseases of affluence many of which have too much protein at their core.

I have read elsewhere that calcium from dairy is inorganic, whereas the body already contains organic calcium within the matrix of the bones and thus needs the same kind in the diet, not recognising or utilising the incorrect calcium from dairy milk. Also, the proteins from meat/dairy diets leaches out the calcium from the bones. Nothing else for it...GO VEGAN...!!

Since I am not lactose intolerant, milk is no problem for me to digest and drink organic milk not factory farmed milk.

So interesting. I've become more and more sceptic about milk or dairy products with time, now I consume them as little as possible, if you think about it, it is just not natural. I feel reassured now. Thanks!

the countries with the highest milk consumption have the highest rates of osteoporosis

No one food is a fix for all your problems! Vitamin D is useless w/o Vitamin A and, for one of them, the only useful source for the vitamin is to get sunlight! Living goes hand in hand with Life; you can't have one without the other, so get out there and live, eat lots of variety, in the sunshine! then, walk it off! Best way to live, ever!

The closest I get to milk is cheese.
