Mirror, Mirror On the Wall? Feng Shui How-To

Mirror, Mirror On the Wall? Feng Shui How-To
13 comments

Adapted from Feng Shui: Back to Balance, by Sally Fretwell (New World Library, 2001).

Mirrors are often used in Feng Shui for a variety of reasons.

They
can expand a narrow hallway or draw sunlight into a dark room. The
author finds mirrors to be spectacular for long alley kitchens and
spaces that need to draw in natural sunlight.

Amazing things happen
when you use a mirror that effectively pulls in the outdoors and
warmth from the sun. But they can also have a negative impact.

One woman had a whole 10-foot wall of small strip mirrors. They
reflected the highway in front of her house. The woman who moved
into the house developed heart problems and multiple panic attacks.
Sitting in her living room it looked like the highway was driving
through it, with cars flying and swerving around the room. Worse,
the small mirrors made the images vibrate and distort!

Mirrors have a powerful effect on your well-being. How are you best
using mirrors? What might be harmful? What is the ideal use of
mirrors?

Mirrors are powerful and not to be taken lightly. Small mirrors can cause distortion and they often chop up an image.

Full Reflection Mirrors are Ideal
A mirror is ideal when you can see yourself clearly in it. It is the only time you see yourself, and it is best that it be a true reflection. A mirror that encompasses more than just a bit of an image, in other words a full picture, reflects balance and allows the brain to integrate.

One couple contacted the author. The husband felt that his efforts were going unnoticed at work. During a tour of their home the author noticed that the mirrors that were all very old and cracked, and hung very low. When asked why the mirrors were hung so low, the wife said that because she was shorter than her 6-foot-5-inch husband, she assumed he could bend down to see himself in the mirrors set for her height.

The problem was that he never did bend down, and energetically every mirror cut his head off; thus he never saw his own true reflection. The couple installed new mirrors. On some level he really did want to look in a clear mirror in the morning, and to his surprise he found that the new mirror that encompassed the whole upper half of his body helped him feel more integrated.

Spooky Mirrors
Have you ever walked by a mirror and felt spooked, as if you had seen a ghost? Well, certain arrangements of mirrors can be shocking. For example, two mirrors placed on opposite walls facing each other can be disconcerting and make you feel ungrounded, because when you look in the mirror you could see your reflection ad infinitum. This tends to bring up insecurities, as well as ancestral memories. The author saw this once in a place where two large mirrors faced each other, creating a whirlwind of subconscious issues.

I have moved! Turns out I had no choice, and I feel so much better. After just over a week of being in that room I had all the symptoms of carbon-monoxide poisoning, and spent 3 hours in hospital before they cleared me to go home. crazy! I am now sofa surfing for a month or so, then plan to move into a 4 walled square-ish room with no mirrors pre-included! thank you for the advice though.. : )

My advice would be to move! If you can't then cover up the mirrors at night with a shawl/piece of fabric - also check what is reflected in them, if it is clutter you will end up with even more of it. Pin and drape a narrow glittery scarf along the underside of the shelving, put a large picture or poster over the blocked door so that it no longer looks like a door. Can the bed be moved so that the head is no longer under the windows? If not ensure that it is dark enough at night so that you sleep better. Hang a small (5 hollow tubed) windchimes from each beam or small faceted crystal to break up effect of beams. Clear clutter and space clear regularly (use 'The Cleanser' spray mist or incense). Ensure room aired regularly to move stale Chi. Hope this helps! Abundant blessings, www.GrassdancerEssences.com

i hav recently moved into a room with many walls facing different directions. because my room is bed/office/living... i have a lot to store, and thus am cluttered at the moment. i have not been feeling well since i moved in. my bedhead is under the window, with the door and a mirror at a NW angle to the end of it. there is an unused fireplace in the NE corner with mirror above, lots of 'spikey' shelving all around, an unused door in the S wall - blocked from the otherside, 2 exposed beams - bed not under, and my work/office area is in the S - desk facing N. is there anything that i can do to balance my space to improve health?

Taria, you do need to be careful with mirrors, remember that it will magnify bad stuff as well as good, so ensure there is no clutter reflected etc. Ensure your bed is not reflected in it. They will be good for bringing light to a dark corner of the room which will help in Feng Shui terms.

I have an idea for a piece of wall art made out of old used CD's and DVD's using the shiny side of them, even though I really won't see my reflection in them, is this still a good idea to do since you spoke of things doubling. Would this help with gaining wealth? Cause right now I need all I can get, I don't need it to go away, I need it come to me. :)

My mirror is across from my bed and window. (My bed is in between) However, my bed is lower than both the window and bed and my curtains are usually closed. Is that okay?

Elly Yule

Lourdes - as long as no part of the head is being cut off when you look into it, you should be okay with the bathroom mirror. The full length closet mirror is fine as it is magnifying the closet contents, so be sure you fill your closet with beautiful things! (If you have anything purple place it in the space opposite the mirror, as purple is the colour of abundance. Purples, golds, blacks would be good in that section of the closet).

Good tips, thank you! What about mirrors in the bathroom that reflect head & shoulders only? (sounded like the shampoo, right? haha). Also, I have a full reflection mirror inside my closet, fixed to the closet door. Is it well placed? It doesn't reflect neither my bed nor the bedroom.

Elly Yule

You do need to be careful where you place mirrors as they will magnify whatever is reflected in them. So if there is a pile of laundry/rubbish/papers you will get more of the same! Ensure there are always clean spaces around a mirror and always check what you can actually see when you look into it. In bathrooms place the mirror so that you cannot see the toilet and the plugholes from sink/bath/shower otherwise your wealth loss will be doubled.

good tip, also, don't let a mirror reflect across your bed, as it can cause sleep disturbances.
