Monsanto’s Glyphosate to Be Listed on California’s Cancer-Causing Substances List

It is a victory for environmental and health activists everywhere: glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup and other pesticide products, will officially be on California’s list of cancer-causing substances, beginning July 7, according to the state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). Known as Proposition 65, Monsanto already unsuccessfully tried to block the listing but was denied by a state appeals court and California’s Supreme Court. Still, the company vows to continue to fight the state.

California’s listing will require Monsanto and other companies that manufacture glyphosate-containing products to label them as cancer-causing or remove them from the market altogether within one year.

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the world, with agriculture as the primary application. Agricultural use of the toxin has sharply increased since the genetic engineering of crops that were made to withstand the chemical. It is also used in forestry, urban, home applications, including on golf courses, vineyards, orchards, landscaped yards and many farms. It is sprayed on over 200 crops covering 4 million acres in California alone.

According to Nathan Donley, a senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity, who stated in a Reuters interview: “California’s decision makes it the national leader in protecting people from cancer-causing pesticides.”

Glyphosate was listed as probably carcinogenic to human by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer back in March 2015. The chemical pesticide has been linked to non-Hodkin’s lymphoma—cancer of the lymphatic system—as well as genetic damage to humans. While the agency has been criticized by some people, including Reuters, for its decision for a supposed lack of evidence to support the “probable carcinogen” listing, the IARC reviewed approximately 1000 studies before drawing its conclusions—a decision that has been met with approval from the scientific community (let’s not forget that the scientists are the true experts on the safety of glyphosate, not corporations or media outlets). Few organizations have so thoroughly reviewed the research on this herbicide.

While Monsanto has criticized the WHO decision, there are allegations of corrupt science that the company faked its own studies to get the herbicide approved.

The WHO agency’s recent research also showed a 13 percent increase in childhood cancer incidence over the last two decades. While the reasons for the skyrocketing incidence of childhood cancer is still unclear, it is possible that glyphosate-sprayed school yards and parks may be playing a role.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) listed glyphosate as a carcinogen 32 years ago, likely because it was aware of the herbicide’s ability to cause cancer. The EPA even categorized it as a ‘Class C Carcinogen.” Class C carcinogens have “suggestive evidence of carcinogenic potential.”

But, the EPA mysteriously reversed its decision. According to EcoWatch, the information gleaned during a lawsuit against Monsanto by people suffering from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, suggests possible collusion between Monsanto and the EPA.

I personally credit the state of California for standing up to the chemical giant which is well-known for its litigious tendencies. State legislators have an obligation to protect the health of the people and the environment, even in the face of corporate greed…and seemingly endless threats of lawsuits and litigation.

One step in the right direction, but I suppose it will still be available. If people stopped buying it, they would have no reason to use it.

About time, but we have gone so far down the path of Roundup-ready and Roundup for home use that if we ever can eliminate its use, it will be very far down the road. There are great, natural methods of killing weeds, like applying cardboard.
