7 Quirky Love Stories (with videos and popcorn!)

Forget chocolate, roses and red paper hearts.

Or go for the chocolate and roses but skip crowed restaurants and movie theaters and plan on spending Valentine’s Day with one of our favorite quirky couples.

Snuggle up on the couch with a cozy blanket, some candied popcorn and nuts (or one of six other healthy alternatives) and yummy aztec hot chocolate and enjoy a great offbeat love story…or two, or three, or seven. We’ve compiled our favorite quirky movies, and included a video trailer for each. Our first pick…

Harold and Maude
The May-December romance between 19 year-old Harold and 79 year-old Maude tops our list of offbeat love stories and quirky romances. A must-watch movie for Valentine’s Day or any other day. Ruth Gordon is fabulous as wacky, irreverent Maude – I’d love to be that carefree at 79! – and Bud Cort is great as the macabre young Harold. The movie is a cult classic and a fave of Care2 editors!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Is it better to have all the painful memories of a past romance–or forget everything about loves-gone-by? In Joel’s (Jim Carrey) journey, he learns he doesn’t want to let go of his past love Clementine, despite a rash decision he made to erase her from his memory. The beautiful and bizarre world that is created by director Michel Gondry is unforgettable. Our second pick for must-see quirky love story.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with food, wine, and free love?  Javier Bardem is the sexy Spanish artist, Penelope Cruz his passionate-yet-crazy ex, and Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall complete the love triangle-with-many-sides. Lush scenery and vibrant scenes of bustling Barcelona make this movie our third fave for Valentine’s Day.

Ok, Orlando Bloom is sexy, Kirtsen Dunst is adorable, and the whole dark-comedy thing is perfect for Valentine’s Day. A quirky romance, great scenery and characters throughout the movie (including Alec Baldwin with a brief but memorable appearance) and a great soundtrack (really, the 2-disc album is worth downloading!) makes the movie our fourth fave.

Annie Hall
Another Woody Allen movie (don’t most of his movies involve quirky couples and complicated romances?), Annie Hall is a great film about the psychology behind relationships. Allen humorously presents the love and frustration that is created when two lovers are completely different, as demonstrated by Diane Keaton and Woody Allen’s characters Annie and Alvy.

Lars and the Real Girl
More of a fable than a romance, this movie still made it on to our list because of it’s sweetness and charm. When loner Lars attempts to find love in a plastic doll/woman, he finds that it is no substitute for the love and support of his community. Funny, uplifting, and number six on our list.

Shrek and Shrek2
OK, so we cheated here and gave you two movies in one, for our 7th pick. But how can one resist the lovable Shrek (Mike Myers), lovely Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), swashbuckling Puss-in-Boots (Antonio Banderas) and hilarious donkey (Eddie Murphy)? This movie-duo is irresistible any day of the week. Laughter and love are always a great combo!

And our runners-up: When Harry Met Sally, Notting Hill, The Princess Bride and 500 Days of Summer.
