National Dog Day–Adopt a Dog

Dog lovers know that you don’t need a special day to celebrate woman’s and man’s best friend. But honestly, if there is National Butterscotch Pudding Day, there might as well be a National Dog Day. And this year, today’s the day.

Started by animal expert and author, Colleen Paige, National Dog Day comes out of Paige’s organization, the (wonderful) Animal Miracle Network. This site is a virtual setting to connect animal lovers, shelters, rescues and businesses who care about helping orphaned animals find new homes.

National Dog Day was created to raise public awareness about the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, and also to celebrate family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. National Dog Day encourages dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure–and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and abuse-free life. Amen!

Given that the Humane Society of the United States estimates that animal shelters care for between 6 to 8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom approximately 3 to 4 million are euthanized, National Dog Day seems like a real lifesaver. So, is there an adopted dog in your future?

For more information about adoption, read about a virtual pet shelter, or check out this tool from Pets911 that will help you locate a local rescue or shelter.

i want to go there and adopt a dog or two.... ot three. i have a dog myslef and to think that i will abandon it somewhere, that would just be heartless of me. he is one of those that have a permanent home. to see and know that many dogs, loyal, loving dogs that would make great companions just being left like this. its truly heartbreaking. may these dogs find a loving home. one that will care and love them. and most importantly, one that will never leave them again.

I love this idea, but at some point you have to look at the big picture. As a former ASPCA worker, I saw SO many sweet, loving, beautiful dogs that didn't get a home the whole year I was working there. I worked at the Peninsula SPCA in Newport News VA, and I commend them on thier efforts to not write off pitbulls like so many others do. Ever heard, "Punish the deed and not the breed"? What I would like to see improvement on is the simple fact that they assumed every dog with a square shaped head was a pit mix but those who know better know that there was no pit in them. People are SO scared of pit bulls and what they have rumored to be. They ARE NOT habitually violent dogs, only the ones that were mistreated, not socialized, etc. Its basic human error. Pit bulls, like every other dog, are, if anything, animal aggressive and that's only if they aren't socialized properly. Please understand that it isn't the breed, its dumb humans who use them for entertainment and money. Ask anyone who owns a pit. They LOVE kids and are the most loyal dogs ever, especially if raised from puppyhood. Save a pit puppy, or an adult dog of any other breed. Save a LIFE that God put on this Earth to provide loyalty, love, and support. Let them fufill their life's purpose. It's a proven fact that those with pets live a longer life because of the feeling of worth.
