New Frankensalmon May Invade U.S.

New Frankensalmon May Invade U.S.

Over the past several weeks, the US Department of Agriculture approved more genetically-engineered (GE) foods:

  • Alfalfa (which becomes hay and then food for animals that becomes food for humans)
  • Corn (specifically a type of corn to produce ethanol)
  • Sugar Beets

Additionally,  there are reports that the Food and Drug Administration  (FDA) is about to allow the first genetically-modified (GM) animal to be sold as food: a fast-growing salmon.

Regardless of the reported potential benefits, the possible environmental and health hazards of this historically unprecedented widespread experiment could have disastrous consequences.  Says New York Times reporter Mark Bittman: “…when ethanol corn cross-pollinates feed corn, the results could degrade the feed corn; when G.E. alfalfa cross-pollinates organic alfalfa, that alfalfa is no longer organic; if a G.E. salmon egg is fertilized by a wild salmon, or a transgenic fish escapes into the wild and breeds with a wild fish … it’s not clear what will happen.”

While the FDA refers to the salmon as a “new animal drug” I propose that it more aptly warrants the title “FrankenSalmon.”  Using the FDA’s self-created loophole, by classifying FrankenSalmon as a “new animal drug,” it allowed the advisory committee that evaluated the salmon’s safety to be made up primarily of veterinarians and animal scientists, not food safety experts or ecologists.

More shocking news about FrankenSalmon on page 2…

Continued.

The link will be to a subscription service saying Fast download for xx.xx dollars per month, then to the right and much smaller it says for slow download(this is the free one) and no support or titles or blah, blah, click here. Click the slow download (it necessarily downloads slowly-5 minutes) and the book is yours-free.

I recommend this to anyone who is a beginner. Infact, the book is made for people who have tried and failed, or want to try for the first time and have success.

Oh boy. More bad news. I mean, I am going to really make a solid attempt to grow my own foods this spring, summer and fall. I said it before, I will say it again, I am reading a super neat book called "All New Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew. You can grow enough food all spring, summer, and fall harvest for 1 adult in a 4X4 square. Really. I can't explain it as well as its describe, but it is very simple, no weeding either! I am still reading it, but it is an above ground 4X4 foot box 6inches deep. Note: for potatoes and carrots and other root vegetables, you need to make it 12 inches deep. Thats it. Then, this is really important, you partition off 16 1x1 foot lots within the box. There is a specific soil mixture and his research is based on how hot houses work(Its not a hot house). The entire plant in a hot house is fed by only 4inches of soil.

The only expenses are the building of the box, the soil mixture, seeds, and of course you need a spade since you will be planting all season(spring, summer, fall) long to get each season's crops.

I found the book for free on an ebook shareware site. I don't remember the name, but it was several pages into the searchpage for "The All New Square Foot Garden, free" that was my search. Immediately you will get paid subscription services, but keep going through the pages and look for an address with shareware..... in it. Then follow the link. The link will be to a subscription service, but reluctantly s

If you're as horrified as I am about this, sign my petition to insist on mandatory labeling of all GM foods
