JANUARY 21, 2008—Renault, Nissan and entrepreneur Shai Agassi gave a much-needed power boost to electric car development. |
First stop, Israel, where the triad plan to develope an electric car network. Renault, France’s No. 2 carmaker, will supply the all-electric power vehicles, while Agassi, of Project Better Place, will construct and operate the charging network.
The group chose Israel as a testing ground because its small size is ideal for the car’s limited range.
“In Israel, where 90 percent of the people drive less than 70 kilometers a day, a car with 100-kilometer range would satisfy most of the population’s transportation needs,” Carlos Ghosn, chief executive oIIfficer of Renault and Nissan, said at a press conference in Jerusalem.
Tax breaks drop the price of the electric car down to the price of a conventional fuel car. Ghosn said that over the life of the vehicle, the cost of ownership would be significantly less.
The new cars feature lithium-ion batteries from Japan’s NEC Corp. and Nissan. Performance of the electric cars should be similar to a conventional vehicle with a 1.6-liter engine. The car is also emission free.
The trio hopes to sell 10,000 to 20,000 cars and install 500,000 charging stations in the next year. Simultaneously, marketing of the new vehicle will begin in other countries.
