Although we have clearly refined the equipment used for our grooming needs, do any of us really know what our hairbrushes are made of? Here we take a quick look at hairbrushes and offer up some great green and vegan alternatives to mass-manufactured hairbrushes.

If you have ever been a little black girl or if you have ever cared for one, you know that dealing with hair can become a huge, unhappy issue. Growing up, I endured hot combs and relaxers to straighten, texturizers to kind-of straighten, grease and oils to give shine to my thick, sensitive locks. I've had a lye-burned scalp and ears, bumps from hair pulled too tightly, and shedding hair due to too much blow drying, curling irons and chemicals. I've bought fake hair to create beautiful braids going down to my mid-back and I've had my hair almost entirely buzzed off so I wouldn't have to deal with it any more. It's taken a long, long time for me to begin to feel "Happy to Be Nappy."

I still remember the cloying smell of the hairspray my mother used before she went to a party&#151agh, the fumes! I'm sure there was a hole in the ozone layer right above our house. When I grew up, I swore I'd never use hairspray. But when I wanted a slightly spiky look, the gel I bought to achieve it smelled almost as bad. Well, there is good news for all of us who want help styling, sculpting, or otherwise holding our hair: We've gathered our favorite formulas to keep your tresses in place without all the plastics, solvents, propellants, artificial fragrances and other chemicals&#151just pure and natural kitchen cupboard ingredients that will hold your hair to perfection.
