As cooks increasingly turn to the web to find and store recipes, recipe organization websites and apps promise to help. The problem is that they’re just about as outdated as that dilapidated binder chock full of handwritten note cards and printed slips of paper that you’re probably still using. Searching a cooking website or app is awesome for ideas for dinner, but collecting those recipes all into one place and sorting them has, until recently, gotten left behind in the era of collaborative internet. A great new start-up called Say Mmm was created to combat this issue.
Say Mmm works with the social media and cloud-based services you already use, like Facebook and Evernote. Instead of saving recipes in an isolated community in which you can only access other user’s recipes, Say Mmm lets you take recipes from all over the web and saves them in one organized place. Say Mmm wants to work with the social media that users are already using, not start another content library from scratch.
In an interview with GigaOM.com, Say Mmm’s founder, Brian Hutchins, said, “We don’t need to reinvent what’s already out there. Rather than be a recipe dumping ground, our end goal is to make tools you can use with recipes that you store anywhere.”
The site not only stores recipes, it also plans meals, compiles grocery lists, estimates nutritional data, and lets you view from any computer or smart phone. You can search recipes by name, keyword, or course. You can even make a schedule of recipes to make in a day or week, and get a grocery list compiled for you.
With Facebook, Say Mmm works to take recipes you’ve “liked” and collect them so they don’t get lost in your news feed. Or you can browse through all recipes in your news feed and search it. Type in “chocolate” in the Facebook app and all the recipes your friends have shared with chocolate in them come up. It syncs with Evernote to display the recipes you’ve collected, complete with pictures, and again, you can search through them easily.
One site yet to be integrated with Say Mmm is Pinterest, but as soon as Pinterest allows programmers, Hutchins plans to move forward with that. Users who have pinned recipes on Pinterest would then be able to categorize and edit those in their recipe library.
Say Mmm is still adding more features and seeking ways to make it more user-friendly. However, they’ve definitely come a long way from the old ‘recipes on hundreds of 3×5 note cards’ approach. Find out more at their website, saymmm.com.
