Independence Day will soon be upon us in the United States. Families and communities celebrate with barbecues, town parades and firework displays.

One of my favorite Independence Day traditions was our family picnic at a nearby sand bottom lake, where we would all play volleyball in the water and then enjoy my mother’s red, white and blue shortcake with strawberries and blueberries.

I would love to hear about your favorite Fourth of July celebrations. Or if you live in another part of the world, what are your favorite summer traditions? Share with us by clicking on “add a comment” below.

When we were kids we always spent the 4th weekend at the lake, and our parents could barely get my brother and I out of the water long enough to eat!

Here in St. Mary's MD we have a traditional type forth, at the fairgrounds gate they take donations for the next year. Everyone brings dinner and chairs to the fair ground. We have a nice band and then the comissiners make their speeches/ Always a yougster sings the national anthum and the the fireworks are sent up. The crowd watching are comprised of farmers, Amish, fisherpersons, Navy and Coastguard an the local townies. And All talk and laugh as the evening goes on. We all call it our americana 4th. The best is that the fair ground is cleaner when we leave then it was when we got there. Go Figure.

Every year my family and I go see the fireworks display at McConnell-Talbert stadium in Warner Robins, GA.

My community creates an annual Liberty Day Parade that is a celebration of art, friends, music and freedom.

When I was a kid, my dad would always have to drive a long way to buy us fireworks. It wasn't until I was much older that I knew why: Because they were illegal in our county. Oops! Anyways, he always put on a great show at the schoolyard. We're a little more cautious and law-abiding these days, though.

We always had a neighborhood block party. The entire block would be closed off to traffic, and we would have games and bbqs in the street. Tons of fun!
