Slow Down: Banishing Hyperthought

Adapted from Clean Sweep by Denny Sargent (Weiser Books, 2007).
Whose mind isn’t racing, given the hyper pace of modern life and incoming information? Here is an exercise to slow down your mind and sanely process ideas, tasks and thoughts so you don’t simply react to things without being fully aware; to stop your mind from racing.
1. When feeling overwhelmed, like your head is going to burst, sit in a quiet place. Relax. Breathe deeply. Be comfortable. Make sure you are not disturbed.
2. Withdraw from the chaos of your mind a bit. Observe your thoughts. Do not try and control them, do not focus on any of them. Do not get hooked into following any of the thoughts. If that happens, stop and begin again. Simply watch your thoughts flow by, like they are racing by on a movie screen.
3. Breathe deeply. Slow your breath down. Relax. As your breathing and heart slow, so will the flow of your thoughts.
4. Count your thoughts. For example, “Oh, I was late to that meeting!” (1) “My foot itches.” (2) “I hope it is sunny tomorrow.” (3) That is all. Just count them. When you reach 100, stop.
5. Now let a thought come. Hold it. Examine it. Deal with it. You have banished that overrun and overwhelmed feeling. You have control of your mind, not the other way around.

add your comment »Writing down your thoughts can help too. This gives a sense of calm when you're manic, and enables you to let go of worrying about forgetting what you're thinking. Strong chamomile and passionflower tea helps me too. (o:

There was a time when I was so absorbed in other folk, my identity was almost stolen. It is taking me awhile to get it back, but I am making progress and it feels good.

I learned many years ago the importance of having quite time for me. As a young mother it was necessary for my sanity, lol, now it's habit. I get up earlier than my daughter and spend a few hours easing into my activities rather than rushing into them. A calm pause before being involved in work,home,family can make it more joyful and emotionally easier.

All of your thoughts and suggestions are worthy. I've had to learn that I can think of myself AND take care of others - everything has to have a time and space. I've learned to allow my compassionate self, my good friend, listening self, my doing self - all some time and attention. AND I've learned to take my share of my time and attention. I have a mentally ill adult "child" whose behaviors can often monopolize my thoughts and eventually I'm unwittingly depressed. NOW, when those random worries & ideas enter my mind, I acknowledge them, remind myself that they are out of my control and I take many deep breaths and focus on relaxing and thinking of a fun time in my life. It works for me.

I have ADD, never grew out of it. My mind likes to race in the middle of the night and keeps me awake, what I do is tell myself its okay to think of all these things, even the nonsense, but its not an appropriate time. I give myself permission to think about it all the next day then I picture a huge set of hand an the tip of my head/mine opening up and visualize all my thoughts pouring out into the hands, the hands then walk off with it all and disappear, sounds strange but it works for me, I actually start to feel sleepy again.

I have experienced some of what you you have. I had to learn to let go of so, so much. Often times my mind wnats to race with thoughts and worries. When all those thoughts decend on me at once I crumble emotionally and physically. Its time to think about taking care of yourself. You are no good to anyone if you are physically and emotionally spent. This news letter is packed full of beneficial tips on how to control your life and not let life control you. My advice is to stay in the moment, keep reading this news letter and get to a group that can help you like Alanon. I have been a member for 17 years now. It did truly save my life.
