The Answers Pt. II

ANSWER 3: Sloths are the slowest mammal on earth.
A. True.

B. False.

Sloths don’t have much of a need for speed — they are perfectly content lazing away in trees!

ANSWER 4: Three-toed Sloths are surprisingly good at:
A.  Defending themselves.
B. Looking cute.
C.  Swimming.
D.  Hunting.

Though they’re not that big on leaving their tree branch habitats, their long arms make them efficient swimmers. They sometimes jump right from a branch into the water. Who needs the ground anyway?!

The Answers Pt. III

ANSWER 5. Sloths have been thought to sleep up to ___ hours a day, but new research suggests that that number is more like ___:
A. 10/15-18.
B. 15-18/10.
C. 20/12.

Sloths are known for being big sleepers. And, in captivity, they definitely are. However, after a first-of-its-kind study, researchers found that wild sloths don’t sleep nearly as much.

ANSWER 6: The ground sloth became extinct:
A. During the Ice Age.
B.  Around 2000 B.C.
C. In the 1550s.
D. In the early 1900s.

Ground sloths on the mainland likely became extinct at least 10,000 years ago, but they survived on the Caribbean island of Antilles until the year 1550. Also happening around that time? European colonization of the Americas, leading researchers to believe that humans may have played a role in their extinction.

The Answers Pt. IV

ANSWER 7: The biggest threat to wild sloths is:
A. Jaguars.
B. Hunting by humans.
C. Eagles.
D. Loss of habitat.

Sloths’ natural predators are indeed jaguars and eagles. Though hunting by humans is a considerable (and horrible) problem for sloths, they can be quite difficult for humans to access, because they are quiet animals that live high up in the trees. Eagles and jaguars are more successful sloth hunters. However, hunting by animals and humans doesn’t even compare to the biggest threat to sloths: the destruction of their natural habitat, tropical rainforests.

ANSWER 8: Sloths usually do which of the following while hanging upside down from tree branches?
A. Eat.
B. Sleep.
C. Give Birth.
D. All of the above.
E. None of the above.

Though it may give us humans quite the head-rush, sloths are perfectly content to perform their daily tasks, and even their most precious moments, while hanging upside down!

Well, I got three right. But how very interesting to read all of the info; thanks for setting it up that way. Ended on that sad note, though, about their losses as a result of our not taking proper care of our rainforests. On another note, why did we come up with a purple dinosaur when the sloth's face is so perfect for a friendly childhood creature? What a great face!
