The Medicine Way for the Holidays
Adapted from Medicine of the Cherokee, by J. T. Garrett and Michael Garrett (Inner Traditions, 1996).
The Medicine Way is seeking harmony within ourselves, and others, and with our surroundings through harmony and balance of personal, social, and environmental relationships. It emphasizes an active relationship between the physical and spirit worlds and the necessity of seeking harmony and balance with both. Careful attention is given to the Law of Reciprocity.
What is the Law of Reciprocity, and why can remembering this keep us in harmony and balance during this holiday season?
The Law of Reciprocity is something is offered for everything that is respectfully taken in order to honor and maintain the harmony and balance of interrelationship and interdependence.
Permission is asked whenever possible and thanks is given.
It requires time and patience, and that we listen to what is in our hearts and to what is around us. Just as it never hurts to show appreciation for others by saying, “Thank you,” it never hurts to show appreciation for all living things, for Mother Earth, and for life itself by simply saying, “Thank you.”
