Sounds scary, but as the Dr. stated they only see one or two cases a year. I'm not worried about it.

Are there really more blind people in Venice, Italy, the city where pigeons ride around on the shoulders of tourists, than anywhere else? I doubt it. This blindness could have been caused by chemo for all we know. Frankly, I'm tired of people sounding all these questionable alarms against animals. I bet more people are killed by fellow humans every year than by animals. In fact, I bet more humans kill animals than the other way around. Think about all the terror and distress that's caused by war-mongering humans among the wild life in the areas these stupid soldiers attack. How many animals were killed or maimed by the two nuclear bombs the US dropped on Japan? What about the effect of America's DU munitions on the wild and domestic animals in the areas the US military uses them? And this woman wants to complain about pigeons?

Interesting... but I agree with the rest of you. Here's another RARE malady (just like the toxoplasma gondii thing with cats). But when it's written about, many people come away with just the most salient points: Cat (or pigeon): Dangerous. Scary! To be avoided. Of course the, ah, less-than-intelligent among us are the most likely to make these conclusions, and they're also the most likely to abuse animals. NOT good.

I do feel very sorry for the girl, though. She certainly couldn't have known and didn't deserve what she got.

Anyway, we should all be careful if we're cleaning up pigeon poop -- especially with a weakened immune system.

Doctors aren't infallible. They don't have all the answers. I wouldn't start ridding the planet of birds or putting a scare into people, when it could have been the chemo...as Gloria H brought up.
