This morning, I read this article in Elephant Journal about the power of being emotionally broken open. When we experience loss, we are given the opportunity to make conscious decisions for our lives and become more authentic. Of course, this is often terrifying.
When we lose a partner or a job, we are forced to re-imagine what our futures will be. Yes, this is scary and painful, but it is also an opportunity for us to move forward. A chance for us to assess what it was about the path we were previously on that no longer served us.
And, even if we don’t make a decision that leads to a difficult loss, even if we come to the conclusion that staying the course is the best choice, allowing ourselves to be emotionally broken open in this way gives us a chance to put all of our cards on the table. All of our fears are laid bare, and we have an opportunity to look at them honestly and decide with authenticity what path to choose.

It's strange that we feel so much fear of change... and that it often takes a tragedy to get us to face up to that fear and make the right choices for us. It's hard to see the loss of a loved one or some other painful situation as anything of a blessing, and calling it a silver lining is a bit trite, but it can be the thing that gets you to change your life, and that's beautiful.
It is true, you have to see the worst that can happen then you will appreciate everything which comes.
There is a mystical Jewish saying: The only whole heart is one that has been broken.
By being broken, you can allow yourself to understand the process, how easy it is to get to this broken place. It teaches humility, compassion for others, empathy, and often serves as a reminder to not judge others and that you are not always in control. Difficult lessons, to be sure, but worthwhile ones nonetheless.
makes some sense.

I know it's hard to hear, but it's true! It makes you a stronger person and gives you more appreciation for what you have! I know, becoming a widow at 37 with two young children opened my eyes wider than they had ever been before!
