The Unexpected Secret to Successful Aging

Seek support: A support network of friends and family is essential for maintaining mental and emotional wellbeing, especially as you age. Social support provides a stalwart shield against disease-causing stress of all kinds.

Tame tension: Whether it’s taking a walk, practicing yoga or reading a book, make sure to regularly engage in activities that you find enjoyable. Taking a break from the pressure and strain of everyday life is essential for building your resilience reserves.

Manage depression: About one in ten American adults suffer from depression, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Women age 45-64 have a higher risk of developing the symptoms of depression, including: excessive fatigue, irritability, feeling hopeless, loss of interest in hobbies and suicidal tendencies. According to Jeste, recognizing and managing depression in adults is vitally important to maintaining good mental and physical health as you age. Consult with a doctor if you feel you or your loved one may be depressed.

The idea that some elements of aging are controllable is a positive one for Jeste, who is optimistic about the future of growing old in America.

“Over the next three decades, we will witness the largest increase in the number of people over age 65 in the history of mankind,” he says. “Our study suggests that an increasing number of these older adults can be productive and contribute to our society in many ways.”

My grandmother aged beautiful until she moved into an apartment with horrible air-conditioner and in one week she looked like she aged several years. Her siblings aged beautifully too. My mother is aged beautifully, and my grandmother on my father's side did as well. Genetics say I have a high chance of aging beautifully by doing nothing by avoiding things that give off chemicals and whatever the air-conditioner was giving off. I do take care of my skin though, homemade lotions, plenty of water, plenty of sun but not too much, and homemade skin block, plenty of plants have juices that help block the harmful UVs and I put it on after about 10-15 mins after being in the sun, just enough so my skin can make what it makes with the sun's rays.

Skin cancer does run in my family and I report any and all things that don't look normal or wasn't there when i was younger to my doctor at my yearly physical and it I panic even before then.

I agree with several comments about laughing. I think the thing that has kept my husband and me feeling good about life is a strong sense of humor. If you can laugh your way through the tough times you've got it beat. Best of all we DID make it through the tough times.....always have, always will. It's the faith we have in ourselves to come out the other end of the tunnel having learned a little more and knowing we'll make it through all those other tunnels.
