This Video Shows the Brutal Double Standard of Beauty

ďThis is why I have trust issues,Ē claims a commenter on one of beauty vlogger Em Fordís makeup looks.

Ford, of Youtube beauty channel My Pale Skin, suffers from adult acne. But that didnít stop her from starting her own popular online beauty destination. After she started sharing photographs of her face without makeup to over 100,000 followers on social media, vicious comments regarding her appearance poured in. Her latest video project, titled “You Look Disgusting,” shows real comments next to Ford’s face.

Although it may be healthy to take a break from makeup every now and then, for many people it gives them the confidence to face the day. Ford receives comments such as ďAcne makes me feel worthlessĒ along with several other comments that show an appreciation for her work. The comments towards the end of the video show just how inspiring the transformations that Ford’s posts are.

“I’m self-taught, and through makeup, I’m improving my confidence and learning to love myself,” writes Ford in the ‘About’ section of her blog.

Fordís video also highlights the harsh double standard that exists around beauty products: On one hand, some commenters shame Ford for her acne, while others claim she is being misleading by wearing makeup.

The beauty industry often relies on insecurities in order to advertise and sell more products. But the message to take away from Fordís video is that despite any perceived flaws, you should feel beautiful with or without makeup.

It isme again, Naomi. For women and girls with bad skin problems / do what your dermatologist recommends AND use make up until the problem is gone.

I suggest a slow use of less and less cosmetics. Use less of one item for a week or so. Then begin on another. This way your friends will not notice you using less. Before long, you may find that more sleep and good eating and exercise will be enough. And see how much money you will save by prolonging what you have AND then not having to buy more.

Thank you, Em, for this courageous and moving little Film. Please, People, do not feel worthless because of the opinion of others who apparently have not learned how to respect their fellow humans (nor probably themselves…). Please know that you are loved because you exist and that you are precious just the way you are. your worth does not depend on what others think of you!!!

Too many people are horrible people, that are UGLY ON TH INSIDE!!!! because of their vile & judgemental comments! I stay away as much as possible from social media because I don't want to be apart of or be subjected to this mean spirited mindset of people that obviously feels that a persons worth is what is on the outside. We can all be so hard on ourselves as it is, we don't need others chiming in condemning us further. E eryone out there that finds it so easy to sling shit at others ought to take a long hard look at themselves....would "they" want their vulnerabilities berated & belittled? Then "do unto others as you would have done to you". Praise softens, criticism hardens....looking for the good in others, is good for one's soul.
