Top 10 Breast Cancer Prevention Tips

posted by Mel, selected from Caring.com Oct 21, 2009 5:02 pm

By Melanie Haiken, Caring.com

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the pink ribbons everywhere, breast cancer is even more on our minds than usual. What better time to think about prevention and awareness?

Breast cancer usually starts with a cancerous, or malignant, tumor located in the breast tissue. Most breast cancers are located in the area around the nipple. For women, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths, following only lung cancer. Although men can get breast cancer, it’s rare (only one half of 1 percent of all breast cancers are in men). Breast cancer is curable if caught early–and is usually treated through some combination of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and other medications.

Are you worried about the possibility of breast cancer in your future, or in the future of someone you love? Here are the top ten things you can do to ensure a breast cancer-free future for yourself and your loved ones.

Thanks for the information !!!

BREASTFEED! it not only reduces the risk for the mother but for her daughter!

How frustrating that breastfeeding wasn't mentioned! Breastfeeding has been shown to dramatically reduce your risk of developing breast cancer later in life.

This is all very interesting, helpful information. I have had liquid filled cysts - about 4 ofthem - had them drained, but then had a "mass" and had to have a biopsy. It was one large cyst on top of another and I had the very intensive mammo, a real squeeze if I might add. The problem in my case is that I can never have chemo or radiation due to a low white blood count. If I get breast cancer ( I don't know if the benign liquid filled cysts mean I am high risk) I will opt to have the cyst surgically removed (no mastectomy) and I will take ESSIAC. I have read about it and when properly prepared, ESSIAC can help people with cancer. I never took Soy supplements but might have had soy protein powder. I have always eaten a lot of tofu but don't smoke or drink, take hormones, and have always gone for mangoes, yams, veggie burgers (soy again), eggplant, salads and belly fat isn't a problem. Where these liquid filled giant cysts come from I haven't a clue. They are filled purely with liquid. I've had a few scares, believe me. If anyone knows about cysts I've had, I'd appreciate the information. Thank you.

Alex R. is right on in pointing to chemicals as cancer culprits - and one of the most important prevention tactics is to reduce exposure to the thousands of carcinogens in daily life and products. For some info on this, check out:
Breast Cancer Action (A rare bc org. focused on environmental hazards rather than expensive and risky tests and treatments)

My own organization, Toxics Information Project (TIP),
which has many articles on health connections, as well as alternatives for household and personal care products:

Another important prevention tip that was not mentioned is regular breast self-exams. I palpated a lump, went to have it mamogrammed and it didn't show up on the mamogram. Then I went for an ultrasound which clearly showed the lump I felt.

Okay, so what you're saying is that women should stop listening to their doctors and "cancer experts" and take the advice of some person on the internet who actually advocates using tanning beds? Riiiiiiiiight.

Last week the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer division of the World Health Organization, classified tanning beds as "carcinogenic to humans" — the agency's highest cancer-risk category, which also includes radon gas, plutonium and radium. From:

So, maybe these cancer experts are also wrong? Or maybe you own a tanning salong.

DO NOT GET MAMMOGRAMS as they do far more harm than good (but they make lots of money for the industry). The first poster here is absolutely right. Thermal imaging is the way to go. (Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging) One site that explains it all is:

The author failed to mention Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Sufficient levels of this hormone alone will prevent many cancers and countless other diseases (yes, it is a steroid hormone, not really a vitamin). The absolute best way to get it is through sun exposure.Period. DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR OR SO-CALLED CANCER EXPERTS. THEY ARE WRONG. Only about 15-20 minutes a day exposing most of your body will give you more D3 than 50 multi-vitamins and the right kind of D. The vitamin D they prescribe is D2. Not anywhere close to the benefits of D3 and actually blocks D3. Do not use it. When sun exposure is not an option (winter, rainy days), supplement with D3 ONLY or go to a good tanning bed. Research those too.
The author advocates getting plenty of mammograms, but goes on to say they are only 16-40% accurate. DO NOT GET MAMMOGRAMS! There are many problems with them besides their inaccuracy.. They are intrusive and painful. They are expensive. Squeezing a breast that has cancerous tumors could cause the tumors to break open and leak-metastasizing throughout your body. Last, but not least, the radiation exposure is cumulative. This will eventually CAUSE BREAST CANCER in the long run. Just ridiculous. I recommend THERMOGRAPHY as the best choice. Easy, fast, non-invasive, painless AND FAR MORE ACCURATE and will detect any abnormalities MUCH SOONER. DO THE RESEARCH YOURSELF!! I'm a guy and know more than most women about their breasts. It shouldn't be that way. STOP relying on do
